“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2
The Christian life is not sustained by human effort alone. Faith begins with Christ, grows through His work in us, and ultimately finds its completion in Him. Hebrews urges believers to keep their eyes fixed on Jesus because He is both the origin and the fulfillment of our faith. The One who first called us into faith continues shaping and strengthening that faith until it reaches maturity.
Jesus is described as the author of our faith, a word that carries the idea of a pioneer who goes ahead and opens the way for others to follow. Our faith does not originate from our own wisdom or determination; it begins with Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He made a way for us to believe, and through the work of the Holy Spirit, He awakens and nurtures faith within our hearts.
Jesus is also the perfecter of our faith, the One who brings it to completion. He does not start the journey and leave us to finish it alone; instead, He continues refining, strengthening, and maturing our faith throughout our lives. Like a master builder who remains involved until every detail of a structure is complete, Christ remains actively at work in us. Because He is both the beginning and the end of our faith, we can trust that the Savior who started this work will faithfully carry it through to completion.
Reflection Question
In what area of your life do you need to trust Jesus not only as the starter of your faith, but also as the one who will faithfully complete what He began?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for being the author and finisher of my faith; help me to keep my eyes fixed on You and trust that the work You began in me will be faithfully completed.
