Start Before You Feel Ready
Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap. Ecclesiastes 11:4
Momentum is essential to purposeful living because we cannot always wait until we feel completely ready, confident, or unafraid before moving forward. One of the greatest obstacles to intentional living is the desire for perfect conditions. We may tell ourselves that we will act when we have more information, more resources, greater confidence, or fewer uncertainties. Yet Ecclesiastes 11:4 warns that the person who keeps watching the wind and studying the clouds may never plant at all. Intentional living requires us to recognize when preparation has turned into procrastination and to take the next responsible step.
The Israelites experienced this tension when they reached the Red Sea with Pharaoh’s army closing in behind them. Fear caused them to cry out to God, but the Lord told Moses, “Tell the Israelites to move on” (Exodus 14:15). There are moments when prayer must be followed by action. Faith does not mean that every question has been answered or every obstacle has disappeared; it means trusting God enough to obey the direction He has already given, even when the path ahead is not yet completely clear.
Imagine a farmer standing at the edge of a field waiting for absolutely perfect conditions before planting. If the farmer refuses to sow because the wind might increase, rain might fall, or the weather might change, the entire planting season could pass without a single seed entering the ground. The farmer cannot control the weather, but he can control whether he plants. In the same way, we cannot control every circumstance surrounding our opportunities, assignments, decisions, or dreams, but we can decide whether uncertainty will keep us standing still.
Consider what you have been postponing because you do not yet feel fully prepared. It may be a conversation you need to have, a project you need to begin, an application you need to submit, a change you need to make, or an assignment God has placed before you. Prepare wisely, pray sincerely, and seek God’s direction, but when the time comes to act, move forward. You do not have to feel completely ready to take the next faithful step; sometimes readiness develops after you begin moving.
Question for Reflection:
What have you been waiting to start because the conditions do not feel perfect, and what intentional step can you take today?
Prayer:
Lord, give me wisdom to prepare, courage to begin, and faith to move forward when You have given me direction, even when I do not feel completely ready.
