Choosing God Intentionally

But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord. Joshua 24:15

We are in an election season in the United States, a time when voters go to the polls to choose the candidates they believe will best represent their interests, values, and communities. Because those choices can influence leadership, policies, and the direction of the country for years to come, voting should not be approached carelessly or impulsively. Voters are encouraged to become informed, weigh their options thoughtfully, and make their decisions intentionally, recognizing that what we choose today can have consequences far beyond the moment of decision.

When I voted this morning, I intentionally chose the candidates I believed were best suited to serve. That experience reminded me that our most important choices should also be made with purpose. In the same way, I want my daily decisions, actions, attitudes, priorities, and thoughts to demonstrate that I have intentionally chosen God. Choosing God means more than professing faith; it means allowing Him to have first place in the way we live.

Joshua understood the importance of making such a deliberate choice. Surrounded by competing loyalties and influences, he challenged the people of Israel to decide whom they would serve and then declared, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15). Choosing God intentionally requires surrendering our plans to His will, obeying His Word even when obedience is difficult, trusting His direction when we do not fully understand it, and aligning our lives with His purposes. As Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15), reminding us that genuine devotion is expressed through obedience.

Joshua’s decision was clear, public, and purposeful, and our commitment to God should be just as evident. Every day presents choices about how we speak, treat others, use our time, respond to difficulties, pursue our goals, and order our priorities. These choices reveal who or what truly has authority in our lives. Choosing God intentionally means deciding each day that His will will guide our decisions, His Word will shape our lives, and His glory will remain our highest purpose.

Question for Reflection:

What area of your life needs to more clearly demonstrate that you have intentionally chosen God?

Prayer:

Lord, I choose You today; help me surrender to Your will, obey Your Word, and live in a way that brings glory to You.
