He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed. The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears; I have not been rebellious, I have not turned away. Isaiah 50:4-5
Believers who have surrendered to a life of obedience to God are often pleasantly surprised by how obedience sharpens their spiritual hearing. The more we obey, the more God speaks. God will not send messages or instructions to people who do not obey. He will wait for their attitude to change and their stubbornness to dissipate so that His instructions can be obeyed.
Many believers lament not hearing from God. They assume that God's silence is the result of a sin they’ve committed. God will not withhold His blessings from us because of our sins. He has already forgiven all sins through Jesus Christ. One reason we don’t hear from God as we hope may be our disobedience.
Obedience sharpens our spiritual hearing the way tuning sharpens a musician’s ear. When we faithfully act on what God has already shown us, our hearts become more sensitive to His guidance. As we walk in obedience, what once felt unclear begins to make sense.
In today’s text, the prophet Isaiah speaks directly to the idea of obedience, sharpening our spiritual hearing. Accordingly, Isaiah proclaims: “He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed. The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears; I have not been rebellious, I have not turned away.”
As you read this devotional, God is awakening your ear to listen like one being instructed. There is something He has asked you to do, but you have not yet obeyed. Don’t be rebellious or turn away from God’s instruction. If you obey, you will hear God more clearly and receive further instructions about the great things He has planned for you. The more you disobey, the longer you delay your elevation.
When we resist God’s instruction, our hearing grows dull, but when we respond with humility and obedience, our sensitivity to His voice increases. Each act of obedience tunes our hearts more closely to His leading, allowing us to hear Him with greater clarity and confidence. As we yield to God daily, He awakens our ears again and again, teaching us how to listen and how to follow.
Question for Reflection
Where might God already be speaking to you, and how could a step of obedience today help sharpen your ability to hear Him more clearly?
Prayer- Blessed Lord, please help me to be fully surrendered to your will and cultivate a life of obedience so my ears can be tuned into the frequency of your voice to hear your instructions and live a Spirit-filled life. In Jesus Name, Amen!
