And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good? Deuteronomy 10:12-13
Many believers underestimate the enemy’s cunningness and determination to destroy them by corrupting their relationship with God. The enemy is an experienced malefactor who has been around for ages. He learns from our mistakes, observes our tendencies, and carefully attacks us in our weakest areas.
One of the ways we can resist the enemy and live victoriously despite his many attacks is through obedience. God’s commands are given for our good and protection. He gives instructions to preserve His people. Obedience becomes a spiritual covering, a boundary that keeps us from choices that look harmless in the moment but carry serious consequences later.
In today’s text, Moses emphasizes that God does not command obedience to take something from us, but to preserve what is valuable in us and keep us from paths that lead to harm. Obedience also preserves our spiritual sensitivity. Disobedience is never only a broken rule; it is a doorway that dulls conviction and weakens communion with God. Over time, repeated compromise makes sin feel normal and distance from God feel acceptable. But obedience keeps us close. It trains our hearts to respond quickly to the Holy Spirit and keeps our conscience clean, which strengthens peace and confidence in our walk with God.
Obedience that protects and preserves is like staying inside a lighthouse’s beam during a stormy night. The light does not stop the wind or waves, but it keeps you from drifting into danger and guides you to safety. In the same way, God’s commands do not limit life; they preserve it by keeping us anchored when temptation, pressure, and confusion try to pull us off course.
Obedience also preserves our spiritual sensitivity, purpose, and stability. When we obey God, we are choosing the path of life, wisdom, and protection, because His boundaries are not barriers; they are blessings.
Reflection Question
What instruction from God have you been tempted to loosen your grip on, and what might He be protecting in your life through that obedience?
Prayer
Lord, thank You for loving me enough to guide me with Your Word. Help me to obey You with a willing heart, even when I do not fully understand, trusting that Your commands are for my good and for my protection. Give me the strength to hold tightly to Your instruction, walk in Your ways, and stay preserved in Your will.
