Reviving a dormant faith

“My soul clings to the dust; revive me according to your word.” Psalm 119:25

Faith is a capacity that every person possesses, yet not everyone chooses to place that faith in God. For many, the faith that God has given remains inactive or buried beneath painful experiences. Some people carry what could be described as spiritual trauma that has shaped how they view God. Disappointments such as unanswered prayers, difficult upbringing, or painful life events can lead individuals to question God’s presence or feel frustrated by what appears to be His silence during challenging seasons.

Even believers can experience moments when their faith feels weak or distant. The enthusiasm that once energized prayer, worship, and trust in God can slowly diminish under the weight of daily pressures, discouragement, or spiritual exhaustion. The psalmist captures this feeling honestly in Psalm 119:25 when he writes, “My soul clings to the dust,” expressing the heaviness that comes when faith feels drained and the heart struggles to remain hopeful.

Yet faith that seems dormant can be revived. Returning to God’s Word reminds us of His promises, His faithfulness, and His power, while consistent prayer draws our hearts back into alignment with His presence. Spending time with other believers through church, small groups, or Bible study can also strengthen our faith as we learn from their encouragement and example. Like embers hidden beneath the ashes of a long-unused fire, faith can begin to burn again when it is stirred by Scripture, prayer, and fellowship. Even when our faith feels buried beneath discouragement, God remains near and is ready to breathe new life into hearts that seek Him.
