Barriers to a growing faith

 Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. Hebrews 12:1-2

Throughout our Christian journey, various obstacles can interfere with the growth of our faith. These barriers may appear as doubt, fear, discouragement, pride, or the everyday pressures of life. If they are ignored, they can slowly weaken our trust in God and hinder our spiritual progress. Scripture reminds us that doubt can cause us to waver in our confidence in God’s promises, while fear can compete with faith for control of our hearts. Likewise, pride and self-reliance can shift our trust away from God, even though Proverbs 3:5 calls us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts rather than depend on our own understanding.

Distractions from the concerns of this world can also prevent faith from maturing. Jesus explained in Matthew 13:22 that the worries of life and the deceitfulness of wealth can choke spiritual growth. When our attention becomes consumed with material pursuits and daily pressures, our focus on God begins to fade.

The story is told of a gardener who once planted a young tree in fertile soil, expecting it to grow strong, but weeds, stones, and nearby plants eventually blocked the sunlight and limited its growth. In a similar way, faith may struggle to develop when barriers such as doubt, fear, pride, and distraction are not removed.

The encouraging truth is that these obstacles do not have to define our spiritual journey. Once we recognize what is hindering our faith, we can begin to address those barriers and pursue renewal. Returning to God’s Word, deepening our prayer life, and intentionally fixing our eyes on Christ help restore spiritual strength. As we remove the things that hinder us, our faith grows stronger and our trust in God becomes deeper.

Lord, reveal anything in my life that is hindering the growth of my faith. Give me the wisdom and courage to remove those obstacles so that my trust in You can grow stronger each day. Amen.
