Faith and unbelief

Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” Mark 9:24

Faith is described in Hebrews 11:1 as confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Yet faith does not eliminate every question or moment of uncertainty. Doubt can sometimes exist alongside faith because we often experience tension between what we believe about God and what we see in our circumstances. Genuine faith chooses to trust God’s character and promises even when emotions or situations raise questions, and as we continue to seek Him, God strengthens our faith and helps us overcome those doubts.

The father in Mark 9 illustrates this reality. He openly admitted to Jesus, “I believe; help my unbelief,” acknowledging both his trust and his uncertainty. His confession revealed honesty rather than hypocrisy because he did not pretend to have perfect faith. Although he believed enough to bring his son to Jesus, he also recognized the weakness within his heart and asked Jesus to help him. Instead of rejecting him for his imperfect faith, Jesus responded with compassion and demonstrated His power by healing the boy.

Faith often looks like the moment a young child hesitates on the edge of a swimming pool while learning to swim. She believes her father will catch her, yet fear still makes her pause before jumping. When she finally leaps into his arms, her action reflects both trust and vulnerability. In the same way, believers may wrestle with uncertainty, but God does not require flawless faith before He acts. He welcomes honest faith that admits its struggle and continues to reach for Him, and as we bring our doubts to Him, our faith grows stronger.

Reflection Question

Where in my life do I need to ask God, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief”?

Prayer

Lord, I believe in Your power and Your promises, yet I confess that doubts sometimes arise in my heart. Strengthen my faith and help me trust You more deeply, even when circumstances challenge my confidence. Amen.
