Holiness in Our Speech

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Ephesians 4:29 NIV

Holiness-conscious believers must prioritize holiness in their speech because words reveal the condition of the heart and the direction of one’s spiritual life. Jesus reminds us that “the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Luke 6:45), which means holy speech begins with a heart surrendered to God. Holiness is not only reflected in what believers avoid doing, but also in how they speak, respond, correct, encourage, and communicate with others. A believer’s tongue must be submitted to God just as much as the heart, mind, hands, and feet.

It is deeply concerning when people who profess faith in Christ use foul, bitter, insulting, dishonest, or careless language in the same manner as those who do not know Him. While no Christian is perfect, the speech of believers should show evidence that they are being shaped by Christ and governed by the Holy Spirit. Words have power to heal or wound, build up or tear down, strengthen or weaken, bless or damage. When believers speak in ways that are corrupt or destructive, they weaken their witness and misrepresent the transforming work of Christ.

Ephesians 4:29 teaches that holy speech is not merely the absence of foul language, but the presence of words that edify, strengthen, and give grace to those who hear. God calls His people to speak with wisdom, kindness, purity, truth, correction when necessary, and encouragement when needed. Before speaking, believers should ask: Will these words honor God, help the person listening, and reflect the character of Christ? A holy life is not only seen in worship, prayer, service, or church attendance; it is also heard in the words we choose every day.

Reflection Question

Do your words consistently build others up, or do they sometimes reveal areas of your heart that still need to be surrendered to God?

Prayer

Lord, sanctify my speech so that every word I speak reflects Your holiness, builds others up, and brings grace to those who hear me. Amen.
