Obedience enhances our influence as Kingdom workers

In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16

What does it mean to have influence? What does influence look like? Is it about having the type of wealth and status that makes other people listen to what you have to say? These days, we hear a lot of talk about social media “influencers.” These are people with millions of followers on a particular social media platform. These “influencers” have financial affluence and are sought after because of their fame.

Kingdom influence uses a different metric. It is not fortune-centered or fame-based. Kingdom influence can only be achieved through obedience. It requires godly character and demands integrity.

Obedience to God leads to integrity, and integrity leads to influence. In Daniel 1 we read about the story of Daniel. Daniel chose obedience to God in Babylon by refusing compromise, even when it would have been easier to blend in. Over time, that consistency built a reputation of integrity and wisdom, and God used it to elevate him into leadership where he could influence decisions at the highest level. Daniel’s integrity became a public witness that expanded his influence and honored God.

In today’s text, Jesus gives his audience the blueprint for spiritual influence. He challenged His audience to “let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Simply put, He told them that obedience keeps you connected to God’s “flow” so you can bear fruit. It helps you make decisions that honor God consistently. Those decisions will not only benefit oneself but also be transformative and empowering for others.

Kingdom influence is not about religious fervor; it’s about spiritual fruitfulness. Obedient living makes your “light” clear, and people are drawn to God through what they see in you. It’s not about title (pastor, deacon, prophet, elder, etc.) It’s about your testimony and how that testimony is helping to transform lives.

Questions for Reflection

Where is God calling you to obey Him in a way that protects your integrity even if it costs you something?

How could that obedience increase your influence for His Kingdom?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, please help me to remain obedient to your will as I seek to proclaim the salvation of the Lord through Jesus Christ. May I not prioritize human recognition, knowing that my influence comes from my assignment as a kingdom worker!
