“And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.” 1 John 5:14-15 (ESV)
Faith is often understood as trusting God to grant what we ask. While belief is certainly part of faith, Scripture points to a deeper truth: genuine faith involves aligning our hearts with the will of God. In 1 John 5:14–15, the apostle John teaches that believers can pray with confidence, yet that confidence rests on an important condition, which is that our requests must be consistent with God’s will. Faith, therefore, is not an attempt to persuade God to support our personal plans; rather, it is the process through which God reshapes our desires so that they reflect His purposes.
This truth can be difficult for many people to accept because prayers are not always answered in the way we expect. When requests go unmet, disappointment can turn into frustration, and some may even begin to question whether God has heard them. Yet Scripture reminds us that unanswered prayers do not mean that God is absent or unconcerned. Often, they reveal that God responds according to His greater wisdom and perfect will rather than our immediate expectations. Recognizing this helps believers move beyond discouragement and grow into a deeper trust in God’s goodness and guidance.
Faith becomes clearer when we think of it like a sailor adjusting his sails to the direction of the wind. A sailor who rows against the wind quickly becomes exhausted, but when the sails are aligned properly, the wind itself begins to carry the boat forward. In the same way, when our hearts and prayers align with God’s will, our desires begin to change and our confidence grows. Instead of asking God to bless our own plans, we learn to trust His wisdom and embrace His purposes, knowing that His will is far greater than anything we could design for ourselves.
Reflection Question
Where in your life might God be inviting you to move from asking Him to bless your plans to aligning your heart with His will?
Prayer
Heavenly Father, align my heart with Your will so that my prayers, desires, and decisions reflect Your wisdom and purposes rather than my own.
