Proverbs 3:5–6 (NIV)
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”

A child reaches up to hold a parent’s hand while crossing a busy street, not because the child understands traffic patterns, but because the child trusts the parent. In the same way, obedience is choosing God’s direction before we understand the full picture. Obedience is trusting who God is, even when we don’t know where He is leading.
It is difficult to obey a God we cannot see if we do not trust what He says. My disobedience to God is often the result of relying on myself instead of trusting His word. Trusting God can be challenging, particularly when we struggle with life’s challenges. However, obedience is trusting who God is, even when we don’t know where He is leading.
What we do know is that God cannot lead us astray. He is too wise to make any mistake. He sees the past, the present, and the future at the same time. Therefore, everything He asks us to do is for our good. Thus, we read in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Trusting God requires unconditional obedience. It is submitting to the Almighty in all our ways because we trust in His sovereign love. Many times, disobedience is not simply a problem of information. It is a problem of trust. When I lean on my own understanding, I become the decision-maker, the protector, and the guide of my life. But Proverbs 3:5–6 calls me to a different posture: to trust God with my whole heart and to submit to Him in all my ways. That means I do not obey only when I understand God’s instruction. I obey because I trust the One who is speaking.
Obedience is not blind or irrational. It is the faithful response of a heart that says, “Lord, I trust You more than I trust myself.” When we trust Him enough to follow, He promises to straighten our path—not always by making life easy, but by making our way sure.
Question for Reflection
Where is God calling you to take a clear step of obedience that requires trusting His character more than your understanding right now?
Prayer: Lord, help me trust You with all my heart. Teach me to stop leaning on my own understanding and to obey You as an act of love and confidence in Your goodness. Lead me in Your way and make my path straight. Amen.
