The Characteristics of Obedience: Surrender

Galatians 2:20: I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

From one of my favorite hymns, we find these lyrics: “All to Jesus, I surrender; All to Him I freely give.” These are very profound words that should be uttered reflexively and contemplatively. These lyrics invite sacrificial living in a spirit of obedience to God.

Indeed, obedience requires surrender. The two are inseparable. Jesus demonstrated obedience by surrendering to the Father’s will in Luke 22:42. Facing unimaginable suffering, He prayed at Gethsemane, “Not my will, but yours be done.” His obedience did not ignore pain or struggle; it acknowledged them while still submitting to the Father. Surrender does not mean passivity or weakness. It means trusting God enough to obey even when the outcome is uncertain or costly.

Surrender requires that we crucify our flesh daily because our natural desires tend to fight God’s will, so obedience means yielding control again and again. Paul describes this surrendered life as being “crucified with Christ” (Galatians 2:20), and Jesus makes it practical by calling us to “take up [our] cross daily” (Luke 9:23). Each day, we choose the Spirit over the flesh, humility over pride, trust over fear, and God’s way over our own.

When we surrender, obedience becomes less about obligation and more about alignment. We obey because we trust who God is, not because we fear punishment. When we surrender all to Jesus, obedience becomes a response of trust rather than a struggle for control, and His life is free to shape our thoughts, choices, and desires.

Question for Reflection

What is the Holy Spirit compelling you to surrender to God today in a spirit of obedience?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we come before You with open hands and willing hearts, choosing to surrender ourselves fully to Your will. Help us to yield daily to Your Spirit, confident that Your way is good and Your leadership is faithful.
