Obedience in Small Things

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much…” Luke 16:10 (NIV)
I find it easier (not easy at all) to obey God when He declares His commands forcefully and decidedly, than when He whispers His instructions without fanfare. When God gives me a direct instruction through a revelation or a sermon, I obey without delay and dismay. But when He whispers to me to speak with grace to someone I disagree with, or to show mercy to someone who has wronged me during my quiet time of meditation, I often disobey and let my emotions overrule my spiritual intuition.
God is speaking to us every day about the things He wants us to do, or the places He wants us to go, or the people He wants us to talk to. We often dismiss those instructions because they are not necessarily loud and compelling. How many times were you prompted to pray, but disobeyed because it was not convenient for you to pray at that time? What about the instruction to abstain from something or someone, but you disobeyed because of the lack of self-control?
Obedience in small things is like tightening one small bolt on a bridge. By itself, it seems insignificant, but over time, those small pieces are what keep the whole structure strong and secure. In the same way, small acts of obedience through your words, your choices, your discipline, and your integrity build a steady life that God can trust and use.
In today’s text, Jesus teaches that “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much” (Luke 16:10). To put it simply, obedience in the “little” prepares us to be good stewards over much. God watches how we handle routine, everyday moments because our attitudes shape our character and prepare us for greater responsibility.
Small obedience shows up in simple places, like telling the truth when it would be easier to bend it, praying when you feel tired, forgiving quickly, controlling your words, showing up consistently, and choosing what is right when no one is watching. These choices may not look impressive, but they carry spiritual weight. God does not overlook the quiet obedience that builds a strong foundation.
If you want God to use you in greater ways, start by honoring Him in the simple, daily choices. Small obedience is never wasted. It is the path God uses to shape you, strengthen you, and position you for more.
Question For Reflection
What is one small area where God has been calling you to obey more consistently?
Prayer- Blessed Lord, please help me to be intentional in honoring you in my simple, daily choices. As I pray to be trusted with much, teach me how to practice Obedience in small things. In Jesus name! Amen.
