How to Walk in Holiness Through Depression and Dejection

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair;  persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our bodies the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our bodies. Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 2 Corinthians 4:8-10; 16

Depression has become increasingly prevalent in society, affecting people across all ages, backgrounds, and socioeconomic groups. The pressures of modern life, including stress, isolation, uncertainty, and unresolved emotional pain, have led many to struggle with persistent sadness, anxiety, and a loss of hope. No one is immune, whether Christian or not, as depression can touch every stage of life and level of spiritual maturity. While faith does not exempt us from emotional struggle, it provides a pathway through it, offering strength, hope, and access to God’s sustaining presence in the midst of difficulty.

Depression and dejection can feel overwhelming because they reach into the deepest parts of the soul, leaving a person weary, confused, and emotionally drained. Yet 2 Corinthians 4 reminds us that even in these heavy moments, we are not abandoned or destroyed. We may be pressed, but not crushed, and cast down, but not defeated. Walking in holiness through depression does not mean denying pain, but surrendering the heart to God in the midst of it. It means choosing to trust Him, remain connected to Him, and allow Him to shape our response, even when our emotions feel unstable or unclear.

Holiness in this season involves remaining open to God’s renewing work, even when the outward life feels strained. While the body and emotions may feel worn, the inward person is being strengthened and renewed day by day. This requires guarding the heart and mind from despair, resisting isolation, and staying anchored in truth through prayer, Scripture, and faithful obedience. Even small steps of faith matter. Your struggle does not disqualify you from walking closely with God. Instead, it can become an invitation to draw nearer to Him, trusting that His grace is at work within you, sustaining you and leading you toward healing, renewal, and hope.

Question for Reflection

In this season of depression or emotional heaviness, are you allowing your feelings to distance you from God, or are you intentionally choosing to stay connected to Him through trust, truth, and daily surrender?

Prayer

Lord, in moments when I feel overwhelmed, help me to remain anchored in You and to walk in holiness even in weakness. Renew my spirit daily, guard my heart from despair, and let Your life be revealed in me as I trust You through this season.
