Holiness as a strategy

For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Hebrews 12:10-11

One of the most overlooked truths about holiness is that it is a divine strategy for growth and fruitfulness in every area of life. Holiness is not limited to avoiding sin; it positions us under God’s wisdom, favor, and order so that our choices, character, and priorities come into alignment with His will. As we walk in holiness, God works within us to produce discipline, discernment, stability, and maturity. In this way, holiness becomes a pathway not only to spiritual development, but also to healthier emotions, wiser decisions, and the kind of fruit that blesses both our lives and the lives of others. God commands holiness because He knows it is the surest way for His people to experience the abundance of His glory and to live in harmony with His purposes.

Hebrews 12:10–11 helps us see that holiness is also one of God’s primary strategies for shaping us into maturity. His discipline is not random, cruel, or meaningless, but is given for our profit so that we may share in His holiness and bear the peaceful fruit of righteousness. Although this refining process is often uncomfortable, it is always purposeful. God uses correction, surrender, patience, and self-denial to form something deeper and stronger within us than temporary comfort ever could. What may feel painful in the moment is often the very means by which God develops spiritual depth, emotional steadiness, and enduring strength in our lives.

For this reason, holiness should be understood as an active and loving strategy rather than a harsh burden. When God calls us away from compromise, pride, distraction, and fleshly desires, He is not trying to diminish us but to develop us. Holiness aligns our thoughts, habits, and desires with His will, strengthens our character, and teaches us to value eternal fruit over temporary satisfaction. As we submit to God’s refining work, we discover that holiness is the pathway to greater intimacy with Him, greater spiritual strength, and lasting fruitfulness. Though the holy life requires discipline and surrender, it always leads to a harvest that proves the process was worth it.

Question for Reflection

What area of your life might God be refining right now so that He can produce greater holiness and lasting fruit in you?

Prayer

Lord, help me to see holiness as Your loving strategy for my growth and maturity. Give me grace to receive Your correction, surrender my will, and trust Your process even when it feels difficult. Produce in me the peaceful fruit of righteousness, and shape my life so that it reflects Your character and Your glory. Amen.
