Characteristics of spiritual warfare: Attacking Churches

But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves…2 Peter 2:1-4

Since the day of Pentecost, the enemy has worked to weaken the Church by creating division, confusion, and spiritual distraction among God’s people. The early Church was not free from conflict, as believers had to address quarrels, jealousy, and behaviors that threatened unity in Christ (1 Corinthians 1:10; 1 Corinthians 3:3; Romans 16:17; Ephesians 4:3; Galatians 5:15). The Church also faced the danger of false teachers who attempted to distort sound doctrine and lead believers away from the truth through deception and destructive teachings (Acts 20:29–30; 2 Peter 2:1–4; Titus 1:10–11). In addition, the early believers endured persecution, suffering, and opposition because of their faithful witness to Jesus Christ (Acts 8:1–3; 2 Timothy 3:12; 1 Peter 4:12–14; Revelation 2:10).

The enemy understands that the Church of Jesus Christ is a serious threat to the kingdom of darkness. For that reason, he has been persistent in his efforts to divide believers, corrupt doctrine, weaken faith, and distract the Church from its mission. However, his attacks cannot cancel the promise Jesus gave in Matthew 16:18, that He would build His Church and that the gates of hell would not prevail against it. Although the enemy can cause damage through deception, compromise, division, and persecution, he cannot ultimately destroy what Christ Himself has established and continues to uphold.

One of the enemy’s most dangerous attacks against the Church is false teaching. In 2 Peter 2:1–4, Peter warns that false teachers would secretly introduce destructive teachings among God’s people. This strategy is especially dangerous because false teaching does not always appear harmful at first. It may come through religious language, emotional appeal, spiritual confidence, or partial truth, but its fruit often includes confusion, pride, greed, compromise, division, and distance from the true gospel of Jesus Christ. When believers are not grounded in Scripture, they become more vulnerable to messages that sound spiritual but lead them away from truth.

For this reason, believers must remain prayerful, discerning, humble, and firmly rooted in the Word of God. Every teaching, message, prophecy, trend, and spiritual influence must be tested by Scripture rather than accepted without examination. The Church is called to love people deeply while refusing to compromise the truth of God’s Word. Even when the enemy attacks through division, deception, false teaching, and persecution, Christ remains Lord over His Church. The enemy may attempt to weaken the Church, but he cannot defeat a Church that remains anchored in Christ, submitted to Scripture, and led by the Holy Spirit.

Reflection Question

Are you growing in spiritual discernment, or are you accepting every message without testing it against the Word of God?

Prayer

Lord, protect Your Church from deception, division, and false teaching. Give us discernment to recognize what is not from You, courage to stand for truth, and humility to remain faithful to Christ and His Word. Amen.
