Walking in Freedom with Joy

This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24

One of my favorite hymns is “This Joy That I Have.” The message of the hymn is a powerful reminder that the joy God gives is not created by the world and cannot be taken away by the world. This joy is a divine gift given to those who believe in Him and walk in true freedom through Christ. It is not materialistic, emotional, or conditional; it is Spirit-filled, deeply rooted, and soul-satisfying. This kind of joy remains steady because it is anchored in God’s presence, sustained by His Spirit, and strengthened by the freedom we have in Him.

One of the characteristics of obedience we examined in January is joy. Walking in freedom with joy means living with the confidence that our peace and contentment are not controlled by our circumstances, but anchored in God’s presence. This joy is not based on what we have, what we feel, or what is happening around us; it flows from knowing that we belong to Christ and have been set free by His grace. When we walk in obedience, joy becomes evidence of a heart that trusts God, rests in His promises, and refuses to return to the bondage of fear, worry, or discouragement.

Walking in freedom with joy begins with recognizing that each day is a gift from God. Psalm 118:24 reminds us that the day before us was not created by our circumstances, our problems, our emotions, or our enemies; it was made by the Lord. Because God is the giver of the day, we can choose to rejoice and be glad in it. Joy is not the denial of hardship, but the decision to trust God’s goodness in the middle of it.

True joy is one of the fruits of a liberated heart. When Christ sets us free, He not only delivers us from sin, fear, shame, and bondage, but also gives us the grace to live with gratitude, peace, and confidence. This joy is not dependent on material possessions, perfect conditions, or temporary emotions; it is rooted in God’s presence and sustained by the truth that we belong to Him. Psalm 118:24 reminds us that every day is made by the Lord, which means we can face each day with faith, gratitude, and joyful expectation, even when life is imperfect.

Imagine a person who wakes up to a rainy morning after planning a beautiful outdoor event. Although disappointment may arise because the day does not look the way they expected, they can still choose to thank God, adjust their plans, and find joy in what remains possible. The rain may change the schedule, but it does not have the power to imprison the heart or steal the joy God has given. In the same way, walking in freedom with joy means refusing to let fear, disappointment, comparison, or discouragement control us, and instead declaring, “No matter what this day brings, God is still good, and I will rejoice in Him.”

Lord, thank You for the gift of this day; help me walk in freedom with joy, remain anchored in You, rejoice in Your goodness, and refuse to let fear, frustration, or disappointment steal the joy You have given me.
