Walking in Freedom with holiness

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Romans 12:1

One of the greatest challenges for believers who are walking in freedom is resisting the temptation to return to old habits, unhealthy patterns, addictions, destructive thoughts, and behaviors that once kept them from living a purpose-driven life according to God’s will. True freedom requires more than being delivered from bondage; it also requires the daily decision to remain surrendered to God, renew the mind, and walk in holiness, obedience, and spiritual discipline.

The story is told of a man who was released from prison after 20 years of unjust incarceration. On the day of his release, he was taken to a five-star hotel and given a luxurious room for the night. Yet the first thing he did was remove the blanket and pillow from the expensive bed and place them on the floor, because after so many years in prison, he was not accustomed to sleeping in comfort. Although he was no longer behind bars, his mind and habits were still shaped by captivity.

The same can be true for many people spiritually. God has set them free, but they continue to return to old habits, old patterns, and old identities because bondage has become familiar. Freedom requires more than being released from what once held us; it requires learning how to live as a new person in Christ. When God delivers us, He does not call us to sleep on the floor of our past, but to rise, walk in holiness, and embrace the abundant life He has prepared for us.

That is why holiness is so critical to walking in freedom. Holiness serves as our spiritual GPS, guiding our thoughts, decisions, desires, and actions so that we do not drift back into the patterns God has delivered us from. It helps us walk in freedom with integrity, discipline, and discernment while keeping our lives aligned with God’s will and purpose. Without holiness, freedom can easily be misused; but with holiness, freedom becomes a pathway to righteous living, spiritual maturity, and deeper intimacy with God.

Throughout the month of March, we examined the significance and necessity of holiness in the life of a believer. We were set free by God to operate as stewards of righteousness, not to conform to the patterns, values, and behaviors of this world. Holiness is the only way we can live out that calling with integrity because it keeps our hearts, minds, decisions, actions, and attitudes aligned with God’s will. My challenge to you this month is to honestly reflect on whether your life reflects the freedom Christ has given you and the holiness God requires of those who belong to Him.

Prayer

Lord, help me walk in freedom with holiness, surrendering my thoughts, actions, attitudes, and desires to You so my life reflects Your righteousness and glorifies Your name.
