Walking in Freedom by faith

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1

For we walk by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7

Walking in freedom is a gift of the Holy Spirit and a privilege given to those who have surrendered their lives to God through Christ Jesus. Through Christ, we have been delivered from the bondage of sin, fear, shame, condemnation, and spiritual slavery. Galatians 5:1 reminds us that Christ has already made us free, but it also calls us to stand firm in that freedom. Therefore, freedom is not something we earn by our own strength; it is something we receive by grace and live out through faith, obedience, and dependence on God.

Faith is one of the characteristics of obedience we explored in January. Faith is essential to walking in freedom because it enables us to trust the God who created us, the Christ who redeemed us, and the Holy Spirit who empowers us. Without faith, it is impossible to fully experience the liberty Christ has made available. Many people remain burdened by old mindsets, fears, habits, and spiritual bondage because they struggle to believe that God has truly set them free. True freedom requires faith because faith helps us believe God’s promises, obey His Word, and live according to the new identity we have received in Christ.

Walking in freedom by faith also requires courage because freedom does not always feel familiar at first. Sometimes bondage can feel comfortable or predictable because it is what a person has known for a long time. Like a prisoner whose sentence has been paid and whose cell door has been opened, a person must still choose to walk out and live differently. In the same way, Christ has opened the door of freedom for us, but faith gives us the courage to step away from what once held us and move forward into the life God has prepared.

To walk in freedom by faith means choosing daily to believe what God has spoken over what bondage has taught us. As 2 Corinthians 5:7 teaches, “we walk by faith, not by sight,” which means we do not wait until every fear disappears or every detail is clear before we obey God. We trust His leading, stand firm when temptation tries to pull us backward, and surrender our lives as vessels of righteousness for His glory. Freedom is not simply being released from what once held us; it is learning to live fully surrendered to the One who set us free.

Question for Reflection

What is one area of your life where God is calling you to stop living like a prisoner and start walking by faith in the freedom Christ has already given you?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the freedom I have in Christ Jesus; help me stand firm, walk by faith, trust Your Word, and leave behind every mindset, fear, habit, and burden that keeps me from living fully in Your liberty.
