The Right Laborers for the Harvest

Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore, pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.

Matthew 9:37–38

It can be frustrating to be in a season of harvest with the wrong laborers. The field may be ready, the fruit may be mature, and the opportunity may be before us, but the wrong people can make the work heavier, slower, and more difficult than it needs to be. Some laborers may lack vision, discipline, faithfulness, humility, or the heart required to steward what God has allowed to grow. A plentiful harvest still requires people who are willing, prepared, dependable, and aligned with the purpose of the Lord of the harvest.

In Matthew 9:37–38, Jesus said, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few,” and then instructed His disciples to pray to the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into His harvest. This shows that the issue was not the absence of opportunity, fruitfulness, or spiritual readiness, but the need for the right people to help gather what was ready. The harvest belongs to God, and only He can send the right laborers into the field at the right time. Prayer keeps believers from choosing helpers based only on convenience, familiarity, talent, or emotion, and positions them to discern who is truly called, equipped, and aligned with God’s purpose.

The right laborers are not simply the people who are available; they are the people who understand the assignment and carry the right spirit. They have the heart, discipline, wisdom, humility, and faithfulness needed to help gather, protect, and steward what God has brought to maturity. Some people may be present but not prepared, while others may be gifted but not submitted to the vision. The right laborers bring strength where there is weariness, wisdom where there is complexity, unity where there could be confusion, and endurance where the work requires perseverance.

Therefore, believers must be careful and prayerful about who they allow into the field during harvest time. Not everyone who wants access to the harvest has the heart to steward it, and not everyone who enjoys the fruit is willing to share in the labor. The right laborers help carry the weight of the assignment without corrupting the purpose of the harvest. As believers seek God’s direction, they should pray not merely for more help, but for spiritually mature, emotionally steady, purpose-driven, and faithful laborers who have the heart, hands, and humility to serve the Lord’s purpose.

Reflection Question

Who has God placed in your life to help you gather and steward the harvest, and who may not be assigned to this season?

Prayer

Lord of the harvest, send the right laborers into the fields You have prepared. Give us discernment to recognize those who are called, faithful, humble, and aligned with Your purpose.  Surround us with people who will help gather, steward, and multiply what You have brought to maturity. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Declaration

I will pray for the right laborers, discern the right partnerships, and trust the Lord of the harvest to send the help needed for His purpose.
