The right Harvest Posture

Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase. Proverbs 3:9

One of the greatest dangers of prosperity gospel misinformation is that it can portray God as a spiritual slot machine, dispensing money to those who meet certain conditions, often conditions tied to giving financially to those who promote the message. This view reduces relationship with God to financial gain and creates the false impression that prosperity is the primary evidence of divine favor. Scripture does not present God as a means to personal wealth, but as the Lord who calls His people to faithfulness, obedience, generosity, holiness, discipline, and stewardship. If God’s ultimate purpose were simply to make everyone wealthy, He would have sent a banker or financial planner; instead, He sent a humble and suffering Servant who redeemed us not with silver, gold, or currency, but with His own blood.

A harvest season often reveals the true posture of the heart. When God brings increase, opens doors, answers prayers, provides resources, or allows fruitfulness to emerge, the question is not only what we have received, but how we respond to what we have received. Some people fail to recognize their harvest because greed has blinded them to the blessings already in their hands. Others are so consumed by envy and comparison that they cannot appreciate their own portion because they are focused on what God has allowed someone else to gather.

Proverbs 3:9 teaches that the proper response to increase is honor: “Honor the Lord with your possessions, and with the firstfruits of all your increase.” The right harvest posture begins with gratitude, because gratitude helps believers recognize every good gift, every open door, and every fruitful season as evidence of God’s faithfulness. It also requires humility, because harvest is not proof that we are better than others; it is evidence that God has been gracious. When believers remember that God gives the increase, they are less likely to turn the harvest into an idol or use it for pride, entitlement, or self-indulgence.

The right harvest posture says, “Lord, this came from You, and I want to use it in a way that honors You.” Firstfruits represent priority, trust, and consecration, showing that God is not an afterthought in the harvest season. When believers honor God first, they are better positioned to steward the rest with wisdom, discipline, generosity, and purpose. Therefore, when God brings increase, the harvest should not pull the heart away from Him; it should draw the believer closer in gratitude, worship, obedience, and faithful stewardship.

Prayer

Lord, give us the right posture in every harvest season. Keep our hearts from greed, pride, entitlement, and comparison. Teach us to honor You with the first and best of what You provide. In Jesus’ name, amen.
