“He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace.” 2 Timothy 1:9
Many people struggle to understand why God places such a strong emphasis on holiness when human beings are imperfect and live in a sinful world. At times, holiness can seem too difficult, impractical, or even unattainable. Yet God never calls His people to holiness without also providing what is necessary to pursue it. In His grace, He has given us the Holy Spirit to lead, convict, and empower us, and He has given us His Word to instruct, correct, and guide us. We are not left to strive for holiness in our own strength, because God faithfully supplies both His presence and His truth to help us grow into the people He has called us to be.
Holiness is not an optional part of the Christian life, nor is it something added after salvation. According to 2 Timothy 1:9, God has “saved us and called us to a holy life,” making it clear that holiness is part of His original purpose for us. This calling is not based on human effort, merit, or worthiness, but on God’s purpose and grace through Christ. Holiness, therefore, is not about trying to earn God’s favor; it is about living out the reality of what He has already done in us. The purpose of holiness is to set us apart for God so that our lives reflect His character, align with His will, and bring Him glory.
Holiness draws us into deeper fellowship with God, enables us to reveal His character to others, and aligns us with His design for our lives. It positions us in right relationship with Him, allowing us to share in His nature and grow in intimacy with His presence. It also makes our lives a visible witness of His truth, love, and righteousness, so that others may see Him through us. At the same time, holiness frees us from the power of sin and shapes us into the image of Christ, leading to spiritual maturity and eternal life. Every step toward holiness is evidence of God’s grace at work within us, showing that the same God who calls us also empowers us to become what He has called us to be.
Reflection Question
Are you living in a way that reflects God’s calling to holiness, or are you settling for patterns that do not align with His purpose?
Prayer
Father, thank You for saving me and calling me to a holy life according to Your purpose and grace. Help me to walk in that calling each day, not by my own strength, but through the power of Your Spirit. Shape my thoughts, desires, and actions so that my life reflects Your character and brings You glory. In Jesus’ name, amen.
