The Process of Holiness

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God... Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” Romans 12:1-2

Holiness is a lifelong process through which God transforms believers from the inside out into the image of Christ. It is not merely a religious experience or outward expression of faith, but the reshaping of our identity in response to God’s saving grace. In this process, God provides the power, grace, and spiritual resources necessary for transformation, while we respond by yielding ourselves to His will in faithful obedience. As His work continues within us, our desires, character, and conduct are gradually brought into alignment with His purity, purpose, and character, so that our lives increasingly reflect the reality that we belong to Him.

This process of holiness begins with surrender. Romans 12:1–2 teaches that believers are to present themselves to God as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to Him, refusing to conform to the patterns of this world. Holiness, therefore, is not rooted in external performance alone, but in a heart that is fully yielded to God. It involves cleansing, obedience to God’s Word, and a daily walk in the Spirit, as every area of life, including thoughts, desires, habits, and decisions, is placed in God’s hands. When we stop living primarily for ourselves and begin living as an offering to God, we position ourselves for His transforming work.

Holiness also involves the renewing of the mind, as the Holy Spirit uses the Word of God to reshape the way we think and live. The world constantly pressures believers to adopt values that are contrary to God’s truth, but through spiritual renewal, our hearts and minds begin to embrace what God loves and reject what opposes His will. Although this transformation may feel slow at times, holiness is not measured by speed but by submission. Each act of obedience, each moment of correction, and each daily choice to follow God forms us more deeply into the likeness of Christ. Holiness is not perfection achieved by human effort, but the ongoing result of a surrendered life being transformed by God’s sanctifying grace.

Question for Reflection

What areas of your life still need to be placed on the altar before God, and where is He calling you to allow His Word to renew your mind?

Prayer

Lord, I surrender myself to You as a living sacrifice. Renew my mind, reshape my desires, and teach me to walk in holiness each day. Help me not to conform to the patterns of this world, but to be transformed by Your truth and Your Spirit. Make my life pleasing to You and continue the work of sanctification within me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
