The Potency of our faith

For truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you. Matthew 17:20

Many believers assume that stronger or greater faith automatically produces greater results. However, Jesus offers a different perspective in Matthew 17:20. He explains that the power of faith does not come from how large it appears but from the God in whom it is placed. Even faith as small as a mustard seed possesses remarkable potency because it is connected to the unlimited power of God. The mustard seed, though tiny, grows into a plant far greater than its humble beginning, illustrating that genuine faith, no matter how small, can lead to extraordinary outcomes when it rests in God.

Faith derives its strength not from human determination but from its connection to God’s truth and character. When faith is rooted in God’s Word and anchored in His promises, it becomes a channel through which His power is revealed. The Bible never suggests that believers must possess extraordinary amounts of faith; rather, it emphasizes the effectiveness of sincere faith placed in a faithful God. The enemy understands this principle well. While he knows that people naturally have the capacity to believe, he works tirelessly to weaken and misdirect that faith through doubt, distraction, and discouragement so that believers never fully experience the power available to them through trust in God.

The potency of faith can be compared to a small electrical wire connected to a powerful generator. On its own, the wire seems insignificant, yet when properly connected to its source, it can carry enough power to illuminate an entire building. In the same way, faith may appear small, but when it is connected to the power of God, it becomes a conduit through which His strength flows into our lives. This is why Jesus could say that faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains. The obstacles believers face, like fear, uncertainty, and difficult circumstances, may appear immovable, but faith rooted in God’s power makes the impossible possible.

Reflection Question

What “mountain” in your life might God be inviting you to confront with even a small seed of faith today?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me trust that even the smallest measure of faith placed in You carries great power. Strengthen my heart to believe that nothing is impossible for You and to rely on Your promises above what I see.
