The Cost of the Harvest

Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. John 12:24

Many people struggle to reap their harvest because they are unwilling to embrace the responsibility that comes with it. Every harvest carries a cost, because the fruit does not gather, steward, or use itself. Although God may provide the increase and bring the field to maturity, believers must still participate in the work required to gather what He has allowed to grow. Reaping requires effort, discipline, sacrifice, and obedience so that the harvest can fulfill its intended purpose.

In John 12:24, Jesus uses the image of a grain of wheat to reveal that true fruitfulness requires surrender. A seed cannot produce a harvest while remaining in its original form; it must fall into the ground, be buried, and go through a hidden process before new life can emerge. This shows that spiritual harvest is not produced by convenience alone, but through obedience, humility, sacrifice, and trust. What appears to be buried may actually be God’s way of planting something that will later multiply.

Many people desire the blessings of harvest but resist the process that produces and sustains it. They want increase without sacrifice, influence without obedience, fruitfulness without pruning, and purpose without surrender. Yet Jesus teaches that life multiplies when something is willing to be laid down. Some harvests require believers to release comfort, pride, fear, control, old habits, selfish ambition, or personal preferences so God can bring forth something greater.

The cost of the harvest is not meant to destroy the believer, but to prepare the believer for greater fruitfulness. Jesus is the greatest example of this truth because through His surrender, death, and obedience, salvation became available and a greater harvest was produced than human eyes could have imagined. Therefore, when God calls believers to sacrifice or die to self, it is not to leave them empty, but to position them for multiplication. The harvest has a cost, but it also has a promise: whatever is surrendered to God in faith can become seed for life, increase, and lasting fruitfulness.

What is God asking you to surrender so that greater fruitfulness can come forth?

Prayer

Lord, teach us to understand the cost of the harvest. Help us not to resist the process You use to make us fruitful. Give us the grace to surrender what must be released, the courage to obey when sacrifice is required, and the faith to trust You when the process feels hidden. Amen
