Resting Intentionally
Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest. Mark 6:31
Resting intentionally means making a conscious decision to pause and create space for physical, emotional, and spiritual renewal. Demanding schedules and competing responsibilities often make rest difficult, while the pressure to remain productive can make us feel guilty for slowing down. Yet our worth is not measured by how much we accomplish. When constant activity leaves us exhausted, our health, relationships, and ability to fulfill our responsibilities can suffer. Choosing to rest acknowledges our limits and allows us to care for the life God has entrusted to us.
Rest is a gift from God and an opportunity to receive His care. In Genesis 2:2–3, God rested after completing His work, blessed the seventh day, and made it holy. He was not weary; His rest established a pattern that teaches us the value of stopping. Jesus demonstrated this same care in Mark 6:31 when He invited His disciples to withdraw with Him and “rest a while.” They had returned from their ministry assignments, but the steady flow of people left them without time even to eat. Jesus recognized that faithful service needed to be accompanied by nourishment and refreshment.
Consider a driver on a long journey whose eyes begin to grow heavy. Although reaching the destination matters, continuing without stopping places both the driver and others at risk. Pulling over to rest protects the journey and makes a safe arrival more likely. Similarly, purposeful rest helps us sustain our commitments with greater attention and strength. A full night’s sleep, a quiet walk, an unhurried meal, or time away from work can help us recover and become more present to the people who depend on us.
Today, respond to Jesus’ invitation by making room for a meaningful pause. Set a boundary, ask for help, put down your phone, or allow a nonurgent task to wait until tomorrow. Spend time with God without turning that time into another assignment to complete, and bring Him the burdens you have been carrying. Unfinished work may remain, but you can entrust it to Him while receiving the care you need. Resting intentionally is an expression of faith that God continues to work and provide even when you stop.
Question for Reflection: What practical change can I make today to create space for rest with God?
Prayer: Lord, thank You for caring about my needs as well as my responsibilities. Help me recognize when I need to pause and give me wisdom to make room for rest. Release me from the pressure to be constantly available, and teach me to trust You with what remains unfinished. Renew my body, quiet my mind, and refresh my spirit so I can serve with strength and joy. In Jesus’ name, amen.
