Pursuing Holiness in Seasons of Financial Hardship and Unemployment

“I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” Psalm 37:25

Financial hardship and unemployment can become some of the most painful tests of faith because they affect both our practical needs and our sense of identity. In such seasons, it is easy to feel defeated, discouraged, overlooked, and even abandoned as the weight of unpaid bills, uncertain opportunities, and delayed provision presses heavily on the heart. These struggles are not merely financial; they are also spiritual, because they can tempt us to question God’s timing, care, and faithfulness. Yet Psalm 37:25 reminds us that the Lord does not forsake the righteous. David’s testimony affirms that even in seasons of need, God remains present and faithful to those who trust Him.

Unemployment can be especially painful because it often challenges a person’s dignity, confidence, and sense of purpose. When identity has been closely tied to work, joblessness can leave a person feeling vulnerable, unseen, and unsure of their worth. Yet our value does not diminish when our circumstances change, because our identity is rooted in who we are before God and not merely in the position we hold. In these difficult seasons, holiness means continuing to trust God while remaining responsible, prayerful, disciplined, and open to His direction. It means resisting fear, bitterness, self-pity, and compromise, and choosing instead to honor God with our attitude, speech, decisions, and conduct.

Pursuing holiness in seasons of financial hardship and unemployment means refusing to let lack govern the heart. Rather than giving in to panic or despair, we are called to keep praying, keep trusting, keep acting with integrity, and keep seeking God first. Holiness does not deny the pain of hardship, but it sanctifies our response to it by anchoring us in faith instead of fear. God may provide through unexpected means, through the help of others, through new opportunities, or through the daily grace that sustains us step by step. Therefore, this season should drive us deeper into holiness rather than deeper into anxiety, because even when resources feel limited and the future feels uncertain, God’s faithfulness remains sure, and the righteous are never forsaken.
