Live by Priorities, Not Pressures
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Matthew 6:33
Pressure has become such a normal part of modern life that many people accept it as something they simply have to endure. Students face pressure to achieve academically, employees struggle to meet increasing workplace demands, parents carry the responsibility of raising their children, and believers must navigate the challenges of remaining faithful to God amid life's many distractions. While pressure is often unavoidable, it should never become the driving force behind our decisions or determine how we live. When we spend our lives responding to demands and expectations, we can easily lose sight of what matters most. Living intentionally requires us to make deliberate choices based on our God-given priorities rather than allowing life's pressures to control our direction.
In Matthew 6:33, Jesus declares, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." This instruction comes within His teaching about worry and anxiety over life's necessities, including food, clothing, and other material needs. Jesus was not dismissing these legitimate concerns or suggesting that we neglect our responsibilities. Instead, He was establishing the proper order for our lives by emphasizing that God and His kingdom must take precedence over everything else. When we place God first, our decisions, commitments, and responsibilities can be approached with greater wisdom and perspective. The challenge is not always having too many things to do, but allowing the things that demand our attention to overshadow the things that deserve our devotion. Intentional living means understanding that urgency does not always equal importance and that a demanding responsibility should not automatically become our highest priority.
Consider a parent who works tirelessly to provide financial security and a comfortable lifestyle for the family. Motivated by professional expectations and the desire to succeed, the parent regularly misses family meals, important celebrations, and meaningful moments with the children. Eventually, career accomplishments increase, but family relationships begin to weaken. Although providing for one's family is a worthy responsibility, the pressure to achieve financial success has unintentionally displaced the priority of nurturing those relationships. This illustrates an important truth: We can become so consumed with accomplishing good things that we neglect the things that matter most. The same can happen in our spiritual lives when work, personal obligations, and even ministry activities leave little room for prayer, studying God's Word, and cultivating our relationship with Him. Living intentionally requires the wisdom to recognize when our priorities have become misplaced, the discipline to establish healthy boundaries, and the courage to say no to certain demands so that we can remain faithful to what God has entrusted to us.
Take a careful look at how you spend your time, invest your energy, and make your decisions. Are you constantly responding to the expectations of others, or are you making choices that reflect your relationship with God and the responsibilities He has given you? Not every demand requires an immediate response, and not every opportunity deserves your commitment. Jesus reminds us that when we seek God's kingdom first, we can trust our heavenly Father to provide for our needs as we faithfully fulfill our responsibilities. Therefore, be intentional about making time for God, strengthening your family relationships, protecting your physical and emotional well-being, and pursuing your divine purpose. Refuse to measure the value of your life merely by how busy you are or how much you accomplish. Instead, measure it by your faithfulness to what truly matters. You may not be able to eliminate the pressures of life, but you can decide whether those pressures will control your life or whether your God-given priorities will guide it. Live by your priorities, not by your pressures.
Today's Intentional Living Challenge: Identify one area of your life where pressure has taken precedence over an important priority, and make one deliberate change today to restore what matters most.
Question for Reflection: Are you allowing the pressures and demands of everyday life to dictate your decisions, or are you intentionally prioritizing what matters most to God?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, grant me the wisdom to recognize what truly matters, the courage to resist unnecessary pressures, and the discipline to put You first in every area of my life. Amen.
