IN CHRIST ALONE

Jesus answered him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life; no one goes to the Father except by me. (John 14:6)

Gospel singer Natalie Grant sings the song entitled “In Christ Alone,” which was written by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend. The song says: “In Christ alone, my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song. This Cornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are stilled when strivings cease. My Comforter, my All in All. Here in the love of Christ, I stand.”

As I think about the lyrics, I am convicted in my spirit that it is in Christ alone, I find strength, peace, and hope. When I do not have the answers and cannot see my way ahead, I go to the rock that is Jesus the Christ. Christ is the foundation upon which the believer stands. Romans 8:34 reminds us that Christ is at the right hand of God, making intercessions for us.

Without Christ, our sins cannot be forgiven. For Christ “is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world” (1John 2:2). Robert Critchley sings, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.” Christ has earned our trust and proven his reliability. Just calling on the name of Jesus is enough to turn one’s life around. Indeed, there is power in that name.

In Christ alone is our salvation fully accomplished. For “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to humanity by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Christ is not just a religious leader. He is a Savior. Throughout human history, there have been many notable religious leaders (e.g., Buddha, Muhammad, Shinto, Confucius, etc.). However, none of these men thought of themselves as savior. Jesus is the only one who said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

In Christ alone, do we find the courage to fight injustice on behalf of the oppressed? For he commands us to help set the captives free. Without Christ, it is impossible to love others meaningfully. Christ is the embodiment of love. It was his love that caused him to die for the redemption of humanity.

In Christ alone, do we find the power to resist temptation and to bind demonic spirits? The Spirit of Christ is a Spirit of power and victory. Therefore, we do not have to be afraid when the fiercest drought and storm arise. When our enemies come against us in all their fury, we can have victory over them in the name of Jesus.

It is not possible to walk in righteousness and holiness without faith in Christ. Therein lies the problem for followers of other religions. They do not have a valid and proven model for righteousness and holiness. Thus, they are relying on their works to please God. However, as Isaiah reminds us in Isaiah 64:6, “We are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousness are like filthy rags.”

Christians are taught to pray in the name of Jesus. We are to make our requests known to God by prayer and supplication through Christ Jesus. When the Father looks at us, he sees the blood of Jesus that covers us and blesses us because of the Son. Therefore, our prosperity, our joy, our peace, and our victory is in Christ alone. When Christ is lifted high in our lives, we will experience his exceeding divine favor in every area of life.

Prayer- Blessed Lord, thank you for sending Jesus Christ to save us. Help us to openly and faithfully serve you by believing in Christ alone.
