The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride. Ecclesiastes 7:8
Today marks the final installment of our series, “The New Season.” As we bring this journey to a close, I want to emphasize an important truth: how we leave one season can significantly affect how we enter the next. Transitioning well requires wisdom, discernment, humility, spiritual foresight, and discipline so that we do not carry unresolved issues, unhealthy patterns, or unnecessary burdens into the season God is preparing for us.
Ecclesiastes 7:8 reminds us that the end of a matter can be better than its beginning and that patience is better than pride. We often become so excited about a new season that we begin emotionally leaving the old one before God has finished His work there. Yet how we leave one season can significantly affect how we enter the next. New beginnings are important, but so are faithful endings. Before rushing toward what is next, we should ask whether there are responsibilities to complete, relationships to address, lessons to learn, or assignments to finish. God may be preparing something new, but He also wants us to leave the old season with wisdom, integrity, gratitude, and obedience.
Finishing well means refusing to allow disappointment, frustration, or fatigue to determine how we close a chapter. Some seasons end differently from what we expected. We may leave with unanswered questions, unmet expectations, or wounds caused by people we trusted. The temptation is to become bitter, careless, or emotionally detached because we believe the season no longer matters. However, our character at the end is just as important as our enthusiasm at the beginning. We should not allow a difficult ending to erase the growth, relationships, opportunities, and lessons God gave us along the way. Sometimes finishing well means forgiving someone, expressing gratitude, honoring a commitment, acknowledging a mistake, or simply accepting that God is closing a door we would have preferred to keep open.
Finishing the old season well also requires us to discern what should come with us and what must be left behind. Every season teaches us something, but not everything from one season belongs in the next. We should carry forward the wisdom, maturity, faith, discipline, and lessons God has developed in us while leaving behind resentment, regret, unhealthy attachments, outdated expectations, and patterns that no longer serve God’s purpose. We cannot fully embrace what God is doing next while continually reaching backward for what He has already asked us to release. A healthy transition honors the past without becoming imprisoned by it. We can appreciate where we have been while recognizing that God may now be calling us somewhere different.
Therefore, do not become so anxious for the new season that you neglect the grace required to finish the old one well. Complete what God has placed in your hands. Make peace where peace is possible. Forgive what needs to be forgiven. Learn what needs to be learned. Express gratitude for what the season produced, even if it also brought pain. Then release it into God’s hands and move forward without unnecessary baggage. A faithful ending prepares the heart for a fruitful beginning. When we finish with patience, humility, integrity, and gratitude, we position ourselves to enter the next season with greater freedom, clarity, wisdom, and readiness for whatever God has prepared.
Question for Reflection:
What do you need to complete, release, forgive, or learn from before you can finish this season well?
Prayer:
Lord, give me the wisdom, humility, and grace to finish this season faithfully and enter the next one free from anything You have called me to leave behind.
