Faith for what you have never done before

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11:1

Many people struggle to move forward because they are afraid to step into something they have never experienced or attempted before. New opportunities can feel intimidating because they require us to leave what is familiar and enter situations where the outcome is uncertain. In those moments, faith becomes essential. Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that faith gives us confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we cannot yet see. We may not know exactly how a new season will unfold, but we can trust that if God leads us into it, He will also provide the wisdom, strength, and grace we need to navigate it.

Throughout Scripture, God repeatedly called people into assignments for which they had no previous experience. Noah built an ark in preparation for a flood he had never seen, Abraham left his homeland without knowing where God was taking him, Moses confronted Pharaoh despite feeling inadequate, and Joshua assumed leadership of Israel after years of serving under Moses. God did not require them to have already mastered what He was calling them to do; He required them to trust Him. Their confidence could not rest solely in their own abilities because the assignments before them were greater than anything they had previously experienced. They had to believe that the God who called them would also equip them.

Consider someone who has worked faithfully as part of a team and is suddenly promoted into a leadership position. What once required following instructions now requires making decisions, providing direction, and accepting responsibility for others. The immediate response may be, “I have never done this before.” Fear may encourage that person to retreat to what is comfortable, but faith encourages them to move forward, learn, seek wisdom, ask questions, and develop new skills. They may not know everything when they begin, but growth often takes place after we accept the opportunity. What initially feels overwhelming can eventually become the place where previously undiscovered gifts, abilities, and confidence begin to flourish.

A new season does not always require previous experience; sometimes it requires a new level of faith. We should not allow the words “I have never done this before” to become an excuse for rejecting an opportunity God may be placing before us. Simply because something is unfamiliar does not mean it is impossible, and feeling unprepared does not necessarily mean we are unqualified. When God leads us into unfamiliar territory, we can move forward prayerfully and remain teachable, trusting that His presence will accompany us and His wisdom will guide us. Sometimes God brings us into places we have never been so that we can discover what becomes possible when we depend on Him.

Lord, give me the faith to step confidently into unfamiliar opportunities, trusting that wherever You lead me, You will provide the wisdom, strength, and grace I need to move forward. Amen.
