Don’t be afraid of challenges and setbacks in your new season

The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him;  though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand. Psalm 37:23-24

A new season often brings fresh opportunities, renewed expectations, and exciting possibilities, but it can also introduce unexpected challenges and setbacks. Difficulties do not necessarily mean that we have missed God’s direction or that the season is destined to fail. Psalm 37:23–24 reminds us that even those whose steps are established by the Lord may stumble along the way. The assurance is not that we will avoid every disappointment or obstacle, but that God will uphold us so that a temporary stumble does not become a permanent defeat. When we delight in Him, we can continue moving forward with confidence even when the journey becomes difficult.

Challenges and setbacks can also become part of God’s preparation for greater fruitfulness and responsibility. Throughout Scripture, God allowed His servants to encounter difficult seasons before stepping into significant assignments. Joseph experienced betrayal, slavery, and imprisonment before becoming a leader in Egypt, while David endured rejection, opposition, and years of uncertainty before becoming king. Their hardships were not wasted; God used them to develop character, perseverance, wisdom, and dependence upon Him. Since no one is promised a trouble-free life, as Job 14:1 reminds us, we need a perspective shaped by the Holy Spirit that enables us to recognize that adversity can become preparation rather than simply punishment or defeat.

Imagine someone climbing a mountain and encountering an unexpected section of steep, unstable terrain. The difficulty may force the climber to slow down, examine the path more carefully, adjust the route, and strengthen his footing, but it does not mean the journey should be abandoned. In fact, every difficult step can teach valuable lessons that make the climber better prepared for the terrain ahead. Likewise, setbacks in a new season can reveal what works, expose what needs to change, and develop wisdom we may never have gained through uninterrupted success. Challenges can become opportunities for elevation, and setbacks can become the beginning of a comeback.

Therefore, do not allow the difficulties of your new season to leave you fearful, discouraged, or stuck. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see beyond the immediate circumstance—to recognize light in darkness, hope when situations appear hopeless, and opportunities for growth when the path becomes difficult. When you stumble, remember that God is still holding you; when something does not work, learn from it; and when the journey becomes challenging, trust that God can use even the struggle to prepare you for what lies ahead. Your stumble does not cancel your season, your setback does not eliminate your calling, and your challenge does not diminish God’s ability to complete what He has begun in you.

Question for Reflection:

What challenge or setback in your current season might God be using to strengthen, prepare, or redirect you for what He wants to do next?

Prayer:

Lord, help me not to fear the challenges and setbacks of this season, but to trust Your hand, learn from every stumble, and move forward with faith, wisdom, and confidence.
