Do Not Despise Slow Progress

Who dares despise the day of small things, since the seven eyes of the Lord that range throughout the earth will rejoice when they see the chosen capstone in the hand of Zerubbabel? Zechariah 4:10

The temptation to become frustrated with slow progress can feel overwhelming during the “not yet” seasons of life. We often begin with excitement, energy, and high expectations, but when results do not come as quickly as we hoped, discouragement can begin to settle in. We may question whether our efforts are making a difference or whether we are moving forward at all. Yet slow progress is still progress. Every faithful step matters, and even the longest journey begins with a single step. Finishing what we start does not always require rapid movement; sometimes it simply requires the determination to keep moving forward.

Zechariah 4:10 reminds us not to despise small beginnings or underestimate gradual progress. Zerubbabel had been given the responsibility of rebuilding the temple in

Jerusalem after years of destruction and exile. The task was enormous, the resources were limited, and the rebuilding process may have appeared insignificant compared with the former temple. Yet God encouraged the people not to judge the work solely by what they could presently see. The foundation represented more than a small beginning; it represented obedience, restoration, and evidence that the work had begun. What appeared small in the moment was part of something much greater that God was bringing to completion.

Consider someone building a house one brick at a time. At the end of the first day, there may be very little to see, and even after several days the structure may still appear far from complete. Yet every brick placed correctly contributes to the finished building. In the same way, progress in our lives is often made through small, consistent acts that may seem insignificant when viewed individually. One prayer, one phone call, one page written, one difficult conversation, one disciplined decision, or one act of obedience may not appear transformational, but when repeated faithfully over time, those small steps can produce meaningful and lasting results.

Therefore, do not allow the pace of your progress to cause you to abandon what God has called you to finish. You may not be where you want to be, but that does not mean you have not moved beyond where you once were. Resist the temptation to compare your journey with someone else’s or to dismiss what God is doing because the results seem small. Celebrate each step forward, remain faithful to the process, and trust God with the timing. God is not only present at the finish line; He is present in every faithful step along the way. Keep building, keep believing, keep obeying, and keep moving forward, because what seems small today may become the foundation for something much greater tomorrow.

Question for Reflection

What unfinished area of your life have you been tempted to abandon because your progress has been slower than you expected?

Prayer

Lord, help me to appreciate every step of progress, remain faithful when results are slow, and trust You to bring to completion what You have called me to begin. Amen.
