Do not despise a small harvest

For who has despised the day of small things? Zechariah 4:10

It is a mistake to place too much emphasis on size, especially when trusting God for a harvest. Human beings often measure fruitfulness by quantity, visibility, applause, or comparison, but God does not measure by the same standard. What appears small in human eyes can still carry great power, purpose, and value in the kingdom of God. This is why believers must be careful not to despise a modest harvest simply because it looks different from what they expected or smaller than what someone else has received.

Jesus consistently showed that small things can have significant spiritual value. In Matthew 17:20, He taught that faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains, and in Matthew 13:31–32, He compared the kingdom of heaven to a mustard seed that begins small but grows into something great. In Mark 12:41–44, Jesus praised the widow who gave two small coins because her gift, though small in amount, was great in sacrifice, faith, and devotion. These examples remind us that God looks beyond outward size and sees the faith, surrender, obedience, and purpose connected to what is offered.

A small harvest is still a harvest. It means the seed was planted, the ground responded, and God provided increase. The right harvest may not always be the biggest harvest, but it can still be the harvest God intended for that season. Therefore, believers should not compare their portion with someone else’s, because comparison can blind the heart to gratitude and cause people to dishonor what God has already placed in their hands.

Small harvests also teach faithful stewardship. In Luke 16:10, Jesus said, “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much,” reminding believers that the way they handle small things reveals their readiness for greater responsibility. A modest harvest can train the heart in gratitude, humility, discipline, wisdom, and contentment. Therefore, do not look down on the harvest God has given you; receive it with thanksgiving, steward it with faithfulness, and trust that even a small harvest placed in God’s hands can become seed for greater fruitfulness.

What small harvest has God placed in your hands that you need to recognize, honor, and steward more faithfully?

Prayer

Lord, help us not to despise small beginnings, small progress, or small harvests.  Teach us to steward what You have placed in our hands with humility, wisdom, and obedience.

I will not despise a small harvest. I will receive it with gratitude, steward it with faithfulness, and trust God to multiply its purpose in His time.
