Do Not Be Afraid of Change

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9

New seasons often bring fresh expectations, renewed excitement, and a sense of possibility, especially after prolonged periods of struggle that may have tested our confidence and faith. Yet change can also create anxiety because it moves us away from what is familiar and into circumstances we cannot fully predict. Rather than viewing change only as something to fear, believers can see it as an invitation to trust God more deeply, embrace new possibilities, and follow His direction with confidence.

Joshua experienced this tension when he was called to lead Israel after the death of Moses.

He was stepping into a new and overwhelming responsibility, one that required him to move beyond the leadership and security he had previously known. God did not promise Joshua that the transition would be easy; instead, He commanded him to “be strong and courageous” and assured him, “the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). His courage therefore rested not in his own ability, but in the certainty of God’s presence.

Entering a new season may also require releasing what belonged to the previous one. Imagine standing at the doorway of a new home while still holding the keys to the house you have already left; those keys may represent something familiar and meaningful, but they cannot open the doors of the new place. In the same way, old expectations, habits, fears, relationships, or ways of thinking may no longer fit where God is leading us. Courage does not mean uncertainty disappears; it means choosing to move forward because our trust in God is greater than our fear of what we cannot yet see.

Do not allow fear of change to keep you from embracing the season God may be opening before you. Whether the transition involves a new career, responsibility, relationship, ministry, location, opportunity, or stage of life, God’s presence remains constant even when everything else feels unfamiliar. What seems uncomfortable today may become the place where your faith deepens, your gifts develop, and your purpose becomes clearer. Be strong and courageous, not because you know everything that lies ahead, but because you know the God who goes with you.

What change are you resisting because of fear, and how would your response be different if you fully trusted that God would be with you through it?

Heavenly Father, give me the courage to embrace change without fear, trust Your presence in every transition, and follow confidently wherever You lead me.
