Ask God for the Strength to Continue

Then Samson prayed to the LORD, “Sovereign LORD, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes. Judges 16:28

Samson’s life was marked by extraordinary strength, great victories, painful failures, and missed opportunities as he struggled to faithfully fulfill the purpose God had given him. Poor choices and repeated compromise eventually weakened his effectiveness and left him humiliated, vulnerable, and facing the consequences of his actions. Yet his story did not end in defeat. In his final moments, Samson turned back to God and prayed, “Please, God, strengthen me just once more” (Judges 16:28), and God gave him the strength to strike a decisive blow against the Philistines. His story reminds us that failure does not have to be the final chapter when we are willing to return to God and depend on Him again.

There are seasons when continuing requires more strength than we possess on our own. We may begin an assignment with enthusiasm, confidence, and determination, only to discover that the journey is longer, harder, and more demanding than we anticipated. Fatigue, disappointment, setbacks, opposition, and even our own mistakes can drain us until we begin questioning whether we have enough strength left to finish. Samson reached that point, but instead of relying on the strength for which he had once been known, he recognized his dependence on God. His prayer reveals an important truth: when our strength is exhausted, God remains the source from whom renewed strength can come.

Asking God for strength is not an admission of defeat; it is an expression of dependence and faith. Sometimes we exhaust ourselves trying to appear strong when God is inviting us to acknowledge our limitations and trust Him more completely. The strength that sustained us in one season may not be sufficient for the demands of the next, and we may need fresh grace, renewed courage, clearer focus, and greater endurance. Consider a runner approaching the final miles of a marathon: after traveling so far, every step may become more difficult, but the runner does not need to return to the starting line, only enough strength to cover the remaining distance. In the same way, we may not need a new assignment or a new direction; we may simply need renewed strength to finish what we have already begun.

If you are tired today, do not assume that weakness means your opportunity to finish is gone. The assignment may have taken longer than expected, mistakes may have complicated the journey, or discouragement may have weakened your resolve, but God can still strengthen you for what remains. Ask Him to strengthen your hands, renew your mind, steady your heart, and restore your determination for the next faithful step. You do not have to possess all the strength today that you will need tomorrow; you only need to continue depending on the One who can supply it. You may be weary, but you are not necessarily finished. Ask God for the strength to continue and trust Him to help you complete what remains before you.

Question for Reflection:

Where have you become weary or weakened, and what would it look like for you to ask God for fresh strength to continue today?

Prayer:

Lord, when my strength is insufficient, strengthen me again and give me the courage, endurance, and faith to continue until I have completed what You have placed before me.
