Absolute Truth

Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:32

Jesus described Himself as the way, truth, and the life. Throughout His ministry, Jesus often referred to the Holy Spirit as the spirit of truth. The Father invites us to worship Him in spirit and truth. All three Persons of the Trinity embody truth in its purest sense.

Truth is a divine concept that humanity struggles to comprehend and process. In many instances, truth is often presented as subjective to culture, religious beliefs, or political affiliation. Thus, secular humanists and atheists argue that faith in the God of the Bible is a myth that cannot be substantiated by logic and science. But, for those with faith in God, we believe there is only one truth since there is “One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all” (Ephesians 4:5-6).

The only way to know the truth is by knowing God through Jesus Christ. The truth of God is codified in scripture. For, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

God is truth, and in Him, there is no deception. Without the knowledge of God, the truth remains a mystery to be discovered instead of a reality to live out. Thus, the ungodly remain enslaved to the devil’s lies, and “the wrath of God has been revealed in heaven against all godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness (Romans 1:18).

God has made the truth plain to humanity so that we would not live in ignorance and remain in darkness. Though we can only know in part what we will know in full while we remain in the flesh, God has given us access to His truth and provided His Spirit of truth to guide us and counsel us to live according to His truth.

Living according to the truth is one of the many benefits of accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and living a gospel-saturated life. Yet even among Christians, there has been an increase in the number of people who reject God’s truth. The latest research conducted by the Barna Group shows a rejection of God’s truth and absolute moral standards by American Christians, those seen as most likely to hold traditional standards of morality. Evangelicals, defined as believing the Bible to be the true, reliable word of God, are just as likely to reject absolute moral truth (46%) as to accept its existence (48%). And only a minority of born-again Christians—43%—still embrace absolute truth.

Embracing absolute truth is the beginning of all wisdom and the cornerstone of our faith in the resurrected Christ. Christians believe scripture to be absolute truth. Its teachings are basic instructions about the truth and how to live out the truth in a wicked world. When we are transformed by the renewing of our minds so we can be set free to know God and worship Him in spirit and truth.

Christians should resist the temptation to subjectivize the truth. The word of God is the standard by which all truths are measured or evaluated. Indeed, the word of God is the absolute truth of God given to humanity so we would not be deceived by the devil’s lies and deception. The truth is not a religious

Questions for Personal Reflection

What is your definition of “truth?”

What makes the word of God absolute truth?

Prayer- Blessed Lord, may your word continue to reveal your truth to the world so we will not live in bondage to demonic deception. Please give me the strength to resist and reject any thought or ideology that denies your existence and sovereignty as the creator of all things.
