A SEASON OF OPPORTUNITY

So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:10 ESV

During this season of pandemic and social unrest, opportunities abound for believers to influence the world for Christ, and to grow in their spiritual walk. Whereas, the world may be lamenting this time because of the pandemic I see an opportunity for believers to exercise their faith muscle and speak healing in Jesus' name. If we but look at the world with spiritual eyesight, we will see many opportunities to impact the world for Christ.

The death of George Floyd and the ensuing social unrest that has erupted throughout the country provide an opportunity for the message of social justice to be proclaimed with more urgency. This is also a time for believers to build bridges between the white, black, and brown communities so we can create the beloved community. It is a time for each of us to look within and deal with our unconscious biases so we can live with integrity as members of the body of Christ.

Because of the increasing number of people who are losing their employment, the Church of Jesus Christ has the opportunity to feed the hungry, provide shelter for the homeless, and clothe the naked. That is one of the foremost ministries of the Church. In times of prosperity, we can easily overlook those who sleep in their cars, or in public parks or those who depend on soup kitchens to get a warm meal. However, the economic struggle that has been common to the poor has become more visible for all to see. Now we all have an opportunity to do more than just praying for the poor. We are compelled to use our resources to help them as well.

This is also a time to exercise our love muscles in unconventional ways. For example, taking the time to call at least two people per day to check on them. Or, volunteer to help distribute meals to those who are food insecure. You can also mentor a young couple that may be struggling in their relationship. Let us not forget to check on the elderly that may be home alone.

Despite the challenges of this time of the pandemic, God is still moving in miraculous ways. It is through you and me these miracles are being done. We are the hands, eyes, feet, and mouth that God is using to heal the sick, clothe the naked, set the captives free, proclaim salvation to the lost, and restore joy amid the suffering in the world.

Every day we wake up is an opportunity to draw closer to God and make a difference in the world. For some people, this time provides them the opportunity to rebuild the broken wall in their marriages, finances, and relationship with family and friends. Others may use this time as an opportunity to become more engaged in ministry. This time may be an opportunity for those that lost their job to learn new skills or to start a business.

Take the time to pray and discern what God would have you to do during this time. The fact that we can’t do many of the activities we used to do does not mean we have to be idle or frustrated. Resist the temptation to use this time as an opportunity to binge on Netflix, or CNN, or MSNBC, or FOX, or ESPN, or BET. Instead, use this time as an opportunity to study the word of God to show yourself approved by Almighty God.

Finally, this is an opportunity to be more intentional in planning for the future. Put a saving plan together in case the economic crisis worsens. Focus on your health and wellness and prevent the possibility of contracting COVID-19. If you have elderly parents, think about a plan to help them in case something were to happen to you and there is no one there to help them. Moreover, use this time as an opportunity to strengthen your relationship with the people in your church family as well as your own family. You never know how much longer you will spend with them. Today is a good day to tell them and show them how much you love them.

Prayer- Blessed Lord, thank you for the opportunities you have given your followers amid the pandemic. Please help those who are struggling to seize the opportunity to impact the world for you.
