Wired for Obedience

But if I say, "I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name," his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot. Jeremiah 20:9

Many automobiles do not use keys to start their ignitions. Instead, the driver can just press a button, and the car will start. Some cars are even wired to self-drive. It is suggested that in the future cars will be wired to fly. For now, I am still amazed by the fact that the door of my car automatically unlocks when I get close to the car with the key in my pocket.

Someone somewhere had to wire those automobiles to operate the way that they do. There are hundreds of wires in an automobile. If the wire that causes any of the different functionalities to occur in an automobile were to be cut or malfunction, the car would not operate according to its design.

As human beings, we entered the world wired to sin. However, when we give our lives to Christ, the Holy Spirit re-wire us for obedience unto righteousness. Thus, the things we use to do, we do not do anymore. We become a new creature that has been re-wired to obey Almighty God.

In today’s text, Jeremiah expresses his frustration with prophesying the word of God. Jeremiah was tired of being persecuted, and rejected by his contemporaries for preaching the word of God. However, he could not help himself because he was wired for obedience.

Most pastors/preachers can identify with Jeremiah. At times, we are criticized for preaching the word of God. What our critics do not understand is that we often do not feel like preaching or teaching. We do it because we are wired for obedience. The Holy Spirit does not allow us to rest until we deliver that word for the edification of God’s people.

The Bible is really a spiritual manual that helps us learn about our spiritual wiring. It is a guide that lets us know how to best function according to the way the Holy Spirit engineered us to operate. When we stray from the word of God, our spiritual system malfunctions and needs reset. Through prayer, meditation, and consecration, we realign our spiritual wires so we can maintain our spiritual operability.

I am often amazed to see the things the ungodly do. Some people have no concept of godliness. They lie, or cheat, or kill, or steal or slander without any conscience. Others oppress or abuse the marginalized continually without guilt. They do these things because they are wired for wickedness through disobedience. And one of the reasons their sinful actions shock our spiritual consciousness is because we are wired for godliness through obedience.

Because we are wired for obedience, spiritual disobedience has physical, psychological, and spiritual implications for the believer. Sin can make one physically sick. Many people suffer from cardiovascular diseases or sexually transmitted diseases because of sin. Some people struggle with obesity, or depression, or addiction to pornography or alcoholism, or addiction to illicit drugs, or suicidal tendencies as they try to cope with a sinful past or present.

Not surprisingly, there is no guilt or shame when we walk in obedience to God. Obedience relieves stress and restores godly joy. It helps us to bear fruits of righteousness as we live in the fullness of God.

Whenever I stray from God, I struggle to sleep, eat, think, write, pray, and focus on anything. In truth, the only time I am happy is when I am walking in the will of God. Therefore, I am afraid to disobey the Lord. As an ambassador of Christ, I am wired to do my master’s will. Everything I do is intended to glorify God.

Many Christians struggle to be at ease with their spiritual wiring. The allure of the world makes them think they are missing something. They always feel as if there is a hole in their souls that needs to be filled. And yes, the day we accepted Christ, the load of guilt and shame was taking away from us, thus leaving a big hole that can only be filled with works of righteousness through obedience to Almighty God.

Prayer- Blessed Lord, I pray for Christian brothers and sisters that are struggling to operate according to their spiritual wiring. Open their hearts so they can be receptive to your Holy Spirit and learn to walk in obedience to your perfect will in Jesus' name.
