Whose side are you on

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:4-5

The longest war in history is said to be the Iberian Religious Wars or the ‘Reconquista.’ This war lasted 781 years, from 711 to 1492. The period marked by a long series of battles between the Christian kingdoms and the Muslim Moors for control over the Iberian Peninsula. History does not have a record as to the number of casualties from the Iberian Religious Wars. What we know is that countless lives were lost.

The war between the kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of God is far older and longer than the Iberian Religious Wars. That war has been going on since before the creation of the world. When the devil enticed Adam and Eve to rebel against God, he wanted to turn humanity into enemies of God so we can become his foot soldiers in the final battle of Armageddon.

Believers of Jesus Christ are but soldiers in the Lord’s army. The enemy does not like Christian soldiers. He is determined to destroy as many Christians as possible. All his temptations and spiritual attacks are designed to alienate us from God, so we would not use our spiritual weapons against him.

Many people think they do not have to choose a side in this cosmic war. That is a lie from the enemy. The devil wants people to think they do not have to declare their allegiance to Jesus Christ. He has conned many people into thinking that God does not exist and that the Bible is a myth. Worst yet, there are even those who deny the existence of the devil.

Let me set the record straight; God is real. His existence is beyond question. Nature speaks to his existence. In Romans 1:20, we are told, “ For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” The devil also exists. Throughout history, he has had many names, i.e., Satan, the devil, Lucifer, the Prince of Darkness.

The devil has been managing a proxy war against God, and he often uses Christians to fight his dirty war. That is why we have to be firm in our faith and bold in proclaiming the name of Jesus. For at the name of Jesus, “every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:10-11).

The good news is that we are guaranteed victory in the name of Jesus. That does not mean we will not fight many battles. Thus we have to put on the whole armor of God so we can stand against the schemes of the enemy (Ephesians 6:11).

It is a mistake to think that you can be a lukewarm Christian on your way to heaven. God is looking for committed soldiers. A lukewarm Christian is a fan and not a follower or disciple of Jesus Christ. There is no reward for fans. Fans will not get a crown because they will not have fought the battles or bear the scars for their commitment to the kingdom of God.

So I ask, whose side are you on? Anyone who is not surrendered to God through Jesus Christ is an enemy of God. There is still time for anyone to join the Lord’s army. The purpose of the great commission is to encourage people to choose Jesus while they can. There will not be an opportunity to make that decision after death.

Everyone reading this devotional should feel a sense of burden for every unsaved family member, colleague, neighbor, or friend. We should pray for the courage to share the gospel so that the people in our sphere of influence will join the Lord’s army by confessing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. That is the greatest gift we can give those we love.

Prayer- Lord, I pray for the salvation of the unsaved. Give your disciples a burning passion for sharing the gospel for the salvation of the world.
