The Sin Trap

Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. 2 Timothy 2:22

There is a flower called the Venus flytrap that is native to the wetlands in North Carolina and South Carolina. It is a carnivorous plant that catches its prey—chiefly insects and arachnids by releasing sweet-smelling nectar into colorful traps that resemble flowers. When an insect or spider crawling along the leaves contacts a hair, the trap prepares to close, snapping shut only if another contact occurs within approximately twenty seconds of the first strike. Triggers may occur if one-tenth of the insect is within contact.

In today’s text, Paul warns young Timothy to flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. The devil uses what I call “the sin trap” to ensnare individuals by enticing them with carnal desires. “Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death” (James 1:15).

Believers should pray for wisdom and discernment so they can have spiritual and emotional intelligence to resist the enemy’s temptations. Things are seldom what they appear to be. The devil uses mirages to hide his real motive. We need spiritual 20/20 vision so we can see the sin traps the enemy has set for us.

At times, we do not get what we ask for in prayer because the Almighty knows our petition comes from a desire that can ultimately lead us astray. God is more concerned about our salvation than our satisfaction. He prioritizes our spiritual maturity over our personal happiness.

The Lord wants us to spend eternity with Him in heaven. He realizes that most of us do not possess the spiritual courage to resist temptation all the times. Therefore, the Bible encourages believers to flee. Yes, run like Joseph in the house of Potiphar! None of should ever be overconfident about our spiritual strength. Everyone has his or her breaking point or weakness. Joseph was very strong in his faith and a man of integrity. Yet, when Potiphar wife’s advances became overwhelming, he ran.

In the same way, Paul told young Timothy to flee from youthful lusts. Then, he exhorts him to pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. The problem with some people is that they want to abstain from sin; however, they do not take the necessary steps to avoid cross-contamination.

The only way to avoid the sin traps of the devil is by pursuing righteousness, faith, love, and peace. Paul’s recommendation makes logical and spiritual sense. The Lord orders the steps of those who pursue righteousness (Psalm 37:23). Faith in God comes from a reservoir of trust that is grounded in a relationship of loving union with Him. When the devil attacks people of faith, they run to the Lord, who gives them the strength to resist and overcome.

Love and peace are fruits of the Spirit. Those who cultivate those spiritual fruits are passionate about honoring God and living according to his will. They make it difficult for the enemy to ensnare them in his trap because they know to wait patiently on the Lord to renew their strength. Because of their love for God and others, they do not envy, they do not boast, do not dishonor others, are not self-seeking, and they do not delight in evil, but rejoices with the truth.

Paul’s message to Timothy applies to us all. The Bible describes the Christian life as a marathon. It is a relay race that should be run wisely by the power of the Holy Spirit. It is also helpful to run this relay race with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

Prayer- Blessed Lord, please strengthen those who are crumbling under the weight of the enemy’s temptations, and are ensnared by his sin traps.
