The Secret Place

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Genesis 3:6-7

The most effective weapon in our spiritual enemy’s arsenal is a temptation. The enemy spends time learning about our habits and preferences so that he can customize the right temptation for each of us. He knows our weaknesses and flaws. The enemy studies the way we act and the way we respond to different stimuli so that he can attack us more successfully.

In today’s text, Adam and Eve succumb to the temptation that led to the original sin. Of all the fruits in the garden, why did Adam and Eve have such a craving for the forbidden fruit? God had already given them the ability to resist the enemy’s temptation when he breathed himself into them. Also, he placed them in a garden where he would have access to them, and they would have unimpeded access to him.

That lets me know that the issue is not access to God or spiritual strength; it is our struggle with spiritual obedience. If Adam and Eve had acquiesced to God’s restriction and stayed within the boundary of God’s command, they would not have succumbed to the temptation to eat the forbidden fruit. Up to that point, Adam and Even were in a state of sinlessness. They were the strongest spiritual humans that ever lived, second only to Jesus. Yet the serpent tricked them anyhow.

Our biggest spiritual battle is not with temptation. After all, James reminds us that if we resist the devil, he will flee from us (James 4:7). Therefore, our biggest battle is disobedience. It is only when we walk in disobedience the enemy garner the power to lead us astray.

Notice, it is when Adam and Eve were away from the presence of God that the serpent approached them. The enemy cannot approach those that dwell in the secret place of the most high. He is forbidden to enter that secret place. That is a place of spiritual intimacy with God. It is a place where we walk in the will of God and follow his plan, as revealed in his word. The secret place is the habitation of faith and trust in Almighty God.

When we walk in obedience to God and listen to his instructions, the enemy cannot lead us astray. No weapon formed against a believer that dwells in the secret place of the most high will prosper. When temptation comes, we have to run to God for his overcoming power.

It is not by our power nor by our might can we overcome temptation and defeat our enemy (Zechariah 4:6). Rather, it is by the Spirit of the Lord. When we obey the Spirit of God, He hides us in God’s secret place so we cannot be defeated. How does the Spirit hide us in the secret place of the Most High? He instills in us a reverence for God and a desire to obey the Almighty that is stronger than our desire to gratify our flesh.

In Colossians 3:2-3, Paul tells the believers, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God (Colossians 3:3).” There it is! The precondition for hiding in Christ and dwelling in the Lord’s secret place is a mind that is filled with the knowledge of God through the word of God. Such a mind is set on obedience by default because it is hidden with Christ in God.

Whatever temptation you are struggling with can be overcome if you are sincere about obeying God, for the Lord will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on him because they trust him (Isaiah 26:3). When temptation comes, run to the word of God so you can renew your mind by the power of the Holy Spirit. The devil cannot defeat the person he cannot get access to. As long as we obey God, the enemy will not have access to us. That is God's promise according to Psalm 91.

Prayer- Blessed Lord, help those who are losing their battle with temptation. Remind them of the power and peace you offer to those whose mind stays on you.
