The Real King

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6

Parents of younger children are rushing to go watch the most recent version of “The Lion King.” The film is a photorealistic computer-animated remake of Disney’s traditionally animated 1994 film of the same name. Since 1994, the film has become a celebrated musical that has captivated audiences throughout the world.

The plot features King Mufasa who rules over the animal kingdom in Pride Lands. Mufasa’s newborn son, Simba, is in line to take over the kingdom. However, Mufasa's younger brother, Scar, covets the throne and plots to eliminate Mufasa and Simba so that he may become King. Scar succeeded in killing Mufasa. Simba went into exile and lived a carefree life in the desert under the motto “Hakuna Matata” (no worries in Swahili). At some point in his adult life, Simba is visited by the ghost of Mufasa in the night sky, who tells him that he must return to overthrow Scar and reclaim his rightful place as the King of the jungle.

Simba’s attempt to live a regular carefree life was frustrated by the fact that he was destined for greatness. He tried to hide his identity and ran away from his destiny. Eventually, his father reminded him of his life’s purpose and told him to return to his Pride Lands that had become a drought-stricken wasteland under Scar’s reign.

Jesus is the Lion of Judah who was killed by the enemies of righteousness who resented the fact that our Lord was preparing you and me to inherit eternal life. Satan and his demonic hosts hated the idea that sinful humanity was created by God to have dominion over all creation. Like Scar, he devised a plot to kill Jesus and alienate us from God and the Lord’s kingdom so we would not live out our purpose as members of the royal priesthood and ambassadors of Jesus Christ.

The devil has been trying to turn the world into a wasteland of sin and wickedness wherein he can reign forevermore. However, since Jesus' ascension to heaven, His Holy Spirit has been reminding us of our authentic identity and compelling us to reclaim our rightful place as joint-heirs of God’s eternal kingdom. The sooner we accept our God-given assignment, the faster we will put an end to the devil’s reign on the earth.

Whereas, many people have elected to live a carefree life (Hakuna Matata), followers of Jesus Christ have to prevent the devil from turning their families, their communities, their countries, and the world into a drought-stricken wasteland. We have to remind the world that Jesus is the fountain of life. Those who drink from this fountain will never thirst.

Our victory over the forces of evil is guaranteed because we are children of the real King of heaven. Nevertheless, we must be strong and courageous as we fight against powers and principalities that are terrorizing our loved-ones, neighbors, communities, and country. We have to fight against generational curses, against racism, or sexism, or classism, or xenophobia, and against all oppressive ideologies that are destroying people’s dignity.

In today’s text, Joshua did not think he was ready to succeed Moses and take the Israelites to the Promised Land. However, God told him that he should not be afraid of his enemies, for the Lord, his God will be with him always. Simba was afraid to go back and face Scar. So Mufasa came to him in a dream and told him the only way he could claim his rightful place as the King of the Pride Lands is by going back to face Scar.

Are you running from a God-given assignment because you are afraid of your enemies and haters? Is there someone or someplace you need to go back to help restore order, and bring hope? Don’t think that because you are living a successful and carefree life where you are now that you are living your best life! Perhaps, it’s time for you to go back to the wasteland you left behind to live out your God-given purpose.

Prayer- Blessed Lord, please give your followers the courage and strength to go back to their wastelands and set the captives free with the life-giving message of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
