Spiritual Hacking

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23 NIV

In the world of computers, hacking refers to the practice of modifying or altering computer software and hardware to accomplish a goal that is considered to be outside of the creator's original objective. Those individuals who engage in computer hacking activities are typically referred to as “hackers.” In professional Basketball, hacking has to do with fouling another player to prevent them from scoring.

Every now and then I get an email notice from Yahoo or Gmail or Twitter, telling me that I need to change my password because I’ve been hacked. Professional hackers are capable of stealing other people’s personal information to fleece their bank account or to use their credit cards. Many banks have been hacked. Even the Pentagon has been hacked.

You and I are being spiritually hacked every day. The enemy uses deceptive practices to keep us from living Christ-centered lives. He pays attention to what we say and studies our behaviors, so he can tempt us to modify our behavior and alter the way we live our faith. Jesus says the enemy comes to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). Like a professional thief, he hacks into conversations, our relationships, our physical and mental health so he can modify the way we talk, our attitude, our health, as he tries to steal our joy and destroy our relationship with God.

Christians should have an excellent spiritual filtering system to protect them from spiritual hacking. We have to make sure our thoughts, actions, behavior, goals, attitude, and desires are aligned with the will of God. Proverbs 16:7 says “when a man’s ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies be at peace with him.” Psalm 37:4 says “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires.”

God provides the best protection against spiritual hacking. He gave us his Holy Spirit as a filter to protect us against spiritual attacks. That filter must be planted in our hearts and install in our minds so he can create a firewall to protect us against all demonic viruses or malware.

In today’s text, the wisdom writer urges us to guard our hearts, for everything we do flows from it. The best way to guard our hearts is by walking in the will of God and abiding in his Holy Word. We have to allow the Holy Spirit to have total control of our lives so he can set a firewall around our hearts to resist the ungodly desires of the flesh and defeat the attacks of the enemy.

Without a spiritual firewall, we can easily compromise our integrity and go astray. Every day, the enemy sits around trying to penetrate our spiritual firewall and exploit our weaknesses. He can only succeed when we do not walk in obedience to the will of God. When we decide to do things our way instead of God’s way, we are giving the enemy a backdoor channel to penetrate our spiritual firewall to destroy us.

We should watch what we say because the enemy uses our own words to hack into our relationships. Many relationships are destroyed because of spoken words. Indeed, “death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21). Our words can be the very weapons the enemy uses to keep us from succeeding in our career or school or business, or from having healthy relationships.

During the 2016 presidential election, the Russians used sophisticated computer systems to hack into Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms to gather information about voters so they can influence the election. Some believe they succeeded. The US government has been warned by security experts to take measures to prevent them from influencing the Mid Term election of 2018.

You and I have been warned in today’s text to protect our hearts. We need to pray daily for the Holy Spirit to help us do that so we can impact the world for Christ. And we have to walk in obedience to God so the enemy cannot penetrate our spiritual firewall.

Prayer- Blessed Lord, may your spiritual firewall continue to protect our hearts from the attacks of the enemy.
