Serving God's Purpose in your generation

“Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his ancestors and his body decayed. Acts 13:36

David is one of the most critical and intriguing personalities in the Bible. He started as a shepherd boy. Then he became a feared warrior/soldier. After that, he became a mercenary. Finally, he fulfilled his destiny as the King of a unified Israel.

Throughout his life, David made many mistakes. However, because of his relationship with God, he always recovered. Whatever one may say about David, he lived life to the fullest and served God’s purpose in his own generation. The only regret he had is that he did not get to build a temple for the Lord because the Lord did not want him to do so. Nevertheless, he left enough resources for Solomon to build that temple.

Live life to the fullest and enjoy every moment you have to serve God’s purpose in your generation. Life on earth is the second greatest gift we ever going to receive from God. It is second only to eternal life in heaven. We have an obligation to live it to the utmost.

When we find ourselves getting bored with whatever we are doing, we should add diversity so we can accentuate our human experience. Every person should try something new at least once per year. If you are a physician, for example, learn an instrument in your spare time or write a book, or take up an exciting hobby. If you are an engineer, don’t spend all your times dealing with numbers and architectural plans. Learn to write poetry, or join a culinary class, or volunteer at a battered women shelter.

No one will ever be satisfied with doing the same thing every day. The law of attrition will catch up with us no matter how much we love what we are doing. We each have a book we were created to write. It’s time you start writing that book. There are places on earth we need to visit. New contributions that we can make in a field that is not our forte.

How are you serving God’s purpose in your generation? Do you find joy in your current vocation? No one should dread waking up in the morning. And we should not invest our times (at least 8 hours per day) and talents in a vocation that gives us no satisfaction.

There is more to life than a paycheck for a fancy home or a fancy car. Life is about living with a godly purpose and not about accumulating material wealth. Honestly, I don’t even do my corporate job for money. I do it because I want to help bring drugs to the market that will help people with different diseases. I want to serve God’s purpose in my generation in multiple ways. God wants me to have a diversified ministry portfolio. Therefore, I do many different things and serve in many different capacities so I can live my life to the fullest to His Glory.

Some of you may say, I’m thrilled and satisfied with my life. But, are you serving God’s purpose in your generation? We don’t live to ourselves, but we live as unto the Lord (Romans 14:8). Others may say, I don’t like my job or my life. Well, it’s up to you to make a change and start serving God’s purpose in your generation.

We can do many more things to live life to the fullest. That does not mean we should become a jack of all trades, and the master of none. However, we should also not limit ourselves. There is more to each of us than we can think or imagine. Our best is always ahead of us, no matter how accomplished we are.

On this day, I want you to dare to dream of living your best life. I challenge you to stretch your imagination and think of your greatest accomplishments, or your most rewarding contributions, or your most gratifying experiences. Then pray that God will give you the wisdom and courage to live that life and serve his purpose in your generation as you pursue and live out your dreams.

Prayer- Blessed Lord, I pray for people that are stuck and trying to figure out how to serve your purpose in their generation. Give them wisdom and courage to think outside the box and become more intentional about living their best life to your glory.
