And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 ESV

The company that picks up the garbage in my area is called Reliable Sanitation. I will never know the veracity of that name. What I do know is there is no one or anything in the world that is “reliable.” Everything physical is flawed in some capacity and will ultimately become unreliable.

Only God is indeed reliable. Whatever God says is reliable. His word is beyond question. “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

My son and I had a conversation early this morning on our way back from the gym about the story of the woman in India who gave birth at 73 years old. I told him I find it interesting that people believe this woman’s story, but many people don’t believe that Sarah gave birth at 90. He told me how impractical the story of Sarah is. I reminded him that what is impractical to human beings are reasonable to God. We ended up having a very lively dialogue about the realism of biblical events.

The reliability of the Bible is not measured by whether its stories and events make practical sense in this post-modern age. If you and I were able to go back in time and tell people in the 1500s that humans can travel to the moon in the twenty-first century, they probably would not believe it either. The miracles in the Bible are beyond our ability to comprehend. They transcend our time and understanding.

The Bible is thousands of years ahead of our time. The miracles in the Bible may seem grandiose to us, but a thousand years from now, they may be routine. The point here is that we cannot judge the word of God based on our limited understanding. That is why God asks us to “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5).

The word of God is reliable because it is the revealed and inspired word of an infallible and omnipotent God. For over two thousand years, people have been relying on the word of God. My whole existence is centered on the reliability of this word. I can’t prove many of the miracles that God has done for me. However, every day I wake up I am reminded that it is because of the Lord’s great love (mercy) that I am not consumed, for his compassions never fail (Lamentations 3:22).

The word of God provides reliable instruction for living a purpose-driven life. It is “useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). I find reliable inspiration from the word of God, and it certainly is a source of reliable divine revelation.

What makes the word so reliable is the God that inspired it. It takes a relationship with God to grasp the extent of his reliability. The existence of God is only factual and reliable to those who are open to knowing God. That is why atheists will never believe in the existence of God until they open themselves up to knowing God. I challenge any atheist to pray to the God of the Bible earnestly, and remains an atheist!

God is reliable in his faithfulness. He is reliable in his providential care. The Lord is reliable in his promise of eternal life to all who believe in Jesus. That is why I can say, for Christ, I live, and for Christ, I will die.

In today’s text, the writer praises the Thessalonians for accepting the preached word as the word of God. Believers should pray for spiritual discernment so they can test every preached word to ensure that it is spiritually reliable. Many people are being led astray by false teachers. We need to rely on the Holy Spirit to counsel us unto righteousness so we can differentiate between the reliable word of God and the religious philosophy of human beings.

Prayer- Blessed Lord, teach us to abide by the truth of your word so we can live a life that is pleasing to you.
