Poured Into

But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all. Philippians 2:17

I have a pitcher of Brita water in my Fridge. Throughout the day, members of my family pour water from the pitcher so they can drink. That pitcher pours out many gallons of water on a weekly basis to keep us refreshed. What makes the water from the Brita pitcher worth drinking is the filter it uses to remove harmful contaminants from the water. But the pitcher is only as good as the water that is poured into it. As much as it pours out water, water has to be poured into it so it can fulfill its function as a pitcher of water. Otherwise it would just be a pitcher.

Followers of Jesus Christ are like pitchers of water. The Lord pours into us daily the information and wisdom we need to live as authentic disciples of Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is our filter. He filters the information we receive from the word of God and from other sources so we can be refreshed as we refresh others.

God pours into us so we can pour into others. Indeed, true followers of Jesus Christ are to be poured out as a drink offering through their service to the Kingdom of God. We have to pour out love, compassion, mercy, grace, forgiveness, and godliness daily. People will come to us time and times again so they can be refreshed. In order for us to have enough to pour out to others, we must stay close to the Lord and be open to be poured into.

God pours into us through prayer and the studying of his word. We are poured into as we worship him and fellowship with other followers of Jesus. That is why the Bible exhorts us to pray without ceasing; and to feast on the word of God as our daily bread.

When I’m thirsty, I expect to go to the Fridge to find water to drink from the pitcher of water. Otherwise, I have to get water from the faucet without knowing if the water is filtered or not. Christians have to be ready to give the world the living water of Jesus that has been poured in us. When we don’t they go to other sources to get unfiltered information about God.

The water we have to give is the same water that Jesus gave the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4. Only that water can quench spiritual thirst. The water that has been poured in us is the living water of God. It refreshes the soul of all who drink from it.

Sometimes we can get overwhelmed and feel worn out as we continue to pour into others. But that is the sacrifice and service of our faith to which we are called as followers of Jesus. One thing for sure, those who pour into others will continuously be poured into by the Lord so they will always have enough to refresh others.

When we feel empty and thirsty we need to remember these words:

I have come to the Fountain of Life, A fountain that flows from above; I have passed from the waters of strife And come to the God of love; I have drunk of the heavenly well, In the depths of my being it springs. No mortal can measure or tell The gladness the Comforter brings. Oh, come to the Fountain of life, the Fountain that never runs dry; Oh drink of the boundless supply, For Christ is the fountain of life.

Prayer- Father, please revive and refresh us with your everlasting water from the fountain of life through Christ Jesus
