Have your way Lord!

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7 ESV

My father used to love watching wrestling from the WWF on television. No one could convince him the wrestling wasn’t real. He loved Andre the Giant and Jimmy Superfly Snuka. Whenever one of his favorite wrestlers would pin their opponent down, he would stand up and start counting as the “referee” would count. As for me, I like UFC (real fighting). I love the idea of two athletes who train for a fight and having one man force his opponent to submit.

The word “submit” implies the idea of yielding to a superior force or to the authority or will of another person. Followers of Jesus Christ are to submit to the Lord. We are to yield to the authority of Almighty God who is sovereign in every way. Indeed, God should have authority over ALL areas of our lives.

Whatever area in our lives God does not have authority, the devil will. Human beings were not created to be self-sufficient or entirely autonomous. Most atheists fool themselves into thinking they are independent and do not need God. They reject the idea of a superior force that helps to sustain them. That concept is a lie from the devil. The devil wants people to think there is no God so he can fill the spiritual vacuum in our lives with his demonic spirits. He does not want us to submit to God because he knows that people who submit to God have the power to resist him.

I know that some people question the authenticity and reliability of the Bible. They reject the idea of a loving God who created the world for his pleasure and redeemed his creation by the blood of his Only Begotten Son. But yet they don’t deny the reality of evil in the world. Even Hollywood believes in the Devil. Some of their biggest movie hits have to do with “vampire” or other demonic themes like “Poltergeist,” “Harry Potter” “Lord of the Rings” etc. People spend billions to watch those movies. They believe demonic spirits can harm them. Yet so many don’t believe in the power of God to bless and save them.

Christians are to submit to God because “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens” (Ephesians 6:12 CSB). The only power that is greater than the power of the devil is God’s omnipotence. Our only protection against his demons is by submitting ourselves to the Lord. That is why Psalm 91 says “The one who lives under the protection of the Most High dwells in the shadow of the Almighty. Because you have made the LORD—my refuge, the Most High—your dwelling place, no harm will come to you; no plague will come near your tent. For he will give his angels orders concerning you, to protect you in all your ways” (Psalm 91:1, 9-11).

We submit to God for protection and for peace of mind. The Lord guides and guards the ones who trust in him. He delivers those who find refuge in him. His ears are attentive to the cry of those who yield to his sovereignty. He is quick to deliver those who beseech his strength in their time of weakness.

Those who submit to God acquire divine wisdom to live a purpose driven life. God gives them the strength to finish the Christian race, and he lifts them up every time they stumble and fall. So don’t try to live independent of God. Submit yourself to his authority, and he will give you joy in times of sorrow.

Prayer- Sovereign Lord, you who created the world by your power teach us to submit ourselves entirely to your will and surrender to your providential love.
