Guaranteed Harvest

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9

In 2018, farmers across northern and central Europe faced significant crop failure and bankruptcy as a result of one of the most intense regional droughts in recent memory strengthened its grip on the region. States of emergency were declared in Latvia and Lithuania, while the sun continued to bake Swedish fields that received only 12% of their normal rainfall. Lennart Nilsson, a 55-year-old cattle farmer from Falkenberg near Malmo and co-chair of the Swedish Farmers Association, said it was the worst drought he had experienced.

The situation was even worse in Poland, Belarus and the Czech Republic, where vegetation stress had taken hold. In parts of Germany, some farmers reportedly destroyed arid crops. In the Netherlands, the parched summer caused devastation in many farms.

No one can predict what the future holds. Life on earth does not offer any guarantee. At times, our best is not good enough. Some people eat healthily, they exercise, yet they still get sick and die. Accidents do occur when they are least expected. Yet we cannot become weary in doing good despite the unpredictability of life.

In today’s text, the writer is encouraging the church in Galatia to persevere in doing good. It is discouraging to keep doing good when we keep getting hurt and disappointed. Many people become frustrated and compromise their integrity and identity as God’s holy priesthood so they can get a more favorable result for their labor. What we have to realize is that we were not promised a trouble-free life.

There are many verses in the Bible that talks about the difficulty of life for the believer. Indeed, the biblical expectation is that in this world, we will have trouble (John 16:33). That is what Jesus told his disciples.

The fact is that the most qualified person does not always get the position. Hard word is not always rewarded accordingly. Our kindness can be conceived as a weakness. To some people, our patience can be perceived as laziness or lack of drive to succeed.

The good news is that God guarantees that we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. This is not a pie in the sky promise. God will make sure we reap a harvest in this lifetime. That harvest may not be what we expect, but it will be what is best for us.

Have you ever noticed the wisdom people gain after they’ve gone through a difficult season in life? There are things we learn about ourselves and about life during hardship that keep making us stronger, wiser, and better as human beings and as servants of God. There is a harvest of joy that will only come to those who sow in tears (Psalm 126:5).

God’s promises are trustworthy. So do not grow weary in doing good. Continue to be kind. Remain faithful in your service to the kingdom of God. Do good to others even when they repay you with evil. Let not your frustration dampened the joy of the Lord in your heart when your best efforts are not appreciated. Your harvest is guaranteed.

Prayer- Blessed Lord, strengthened those who may be growing weary in doing good. Remind them of your faithfulness, and flood their heart with the joy of the Lord so they can persevere until they get their reward.
